A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND COMMEND THE EFFORTS OF THE SPARTANBURG HOUSING AUTHORITY TO PROMOTE THE FATHERHOOD INITIATIVE PROGRAM WITH FATHERS AND CHILDREN IN THE PALMETTO STATE.

Whereas, President Obama's nationwide Fatherhood and Mentoring Initiative encourages cities and states, individuals, and organizations to raise awareness about the need of responsible fathering and the importance of working to reengage absent fathers with their families; and

Whereas, studies show that the closer adolescents feel to their fathers, regardless of income, race, or family structure in which they live, the less likely it is that those adolescents will engage in criminal activities; and

Whereas, the goal of the Fatherhood Initiative is to inspire an atmosphere within the Spartanburg Housing Authority and the local community in which fathers can gain development and sustainable life skills while participating in an array of cultural, educational, recreational, and social events that foster engagement between fathers and their children; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives encourage other organizations to join forces with the Fatherhood Initiative to provide supportive services that will enhance the lives of fathers living in public housing in the City of Spartanburg and Spartanburg County; and

Whereas, the House of Representatives encourages fathers living in and outside of public housing to use Father's Day to reconnect with their children and to rededicate themselves to their children's welfare; and

Whereas, the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) designated June 18, 2011, "Father's Day 2011," and the Spartanburg Housing Authority will partner with the United States Department of HUD to present the Fatherhood Initiative to the Spartanburg Community on June 18, 2011; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives are grateful for the work of the Spartanburg Housing Authority in leading the way to promote the Fatherhood Initiative Program and in participating in activities that bring this significant program to the community. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize and commend the efforts of the Spartanburg Housing Authority to promote the Fatherhood Initiative Program with fathers and children in the Palmetto State.
