A SENATE RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE COLUMBIA NATIVE TYRONE CORBIN ON HIS RECENT APPOINTMENT AS HEAD COACH OF THE NATIONAL BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION'S UTAH JAZZ AND TO WISH HIM MUCH FULFILLMENT AND SUCCESS IN THE DAYS TO COME.

Whereas, the South Carolina Senate was pleased to learn that Columbia native Tyrone Corbin recently was selected as the new head coach of the NBA's Utah Jazz basketball team; and

Whereas, Tyrone Corbin early demonstrated his exceptional talent on the basketball court. As a player for A.C. Flora High School, he helped the Falcons capture the Class AAA state title during the 1981 season, a time when Flora's Coach Carl Williams, a mentor in both basketball and integrity of character to his players, taught the young Ty lessons that were to stand him in good stead in his future career; and

Whereas, Ty Corbin played collegiately at DePaul University from 1981 to 1985. In playing 120 games for the Blue Demons, he increased his scoring average and field goal and free throw percentage in each of his four seasons, finishing seventh on DePaul's career scoring list. He was a two-time honorable mention AP All-America selection, as well as an All-NIT choice in 1983, and he was invited to the 1984 Olympic trials; and

Whereas, he graduated with a degree in computer science before becoming a second-round pick of the San Antonio Spurs in the 1985 NBA Draft and was inducted into the DePaul University Athletics Hall of Fame in 2005; and

Whereas, in the NBA, Ty Corbin played at small forward beginning in 1985, putting in a total of sixteen years with San Antonio, Cleveland, Phoenix, Minnesota, Utah, Atlanta, Sacramento, Miami, and Toronto. After his playing career, he spent two seasons with the Charleston Lowgators of the NBDL as a player mentor. He was hired by Scott Layden, then general manager of the New York Knicks, as manager of player development for the 2003-04 season, and in 2004 he went to the Utah Jazz, spending seven years as an assistant coach before being tapped for head-coaching duties on February 10, 2011; and

Whereas, a man who knows how to listen, he has proved that his wide experience and years with the Jazz give him a decided advantage in understanding his players and bringing out their best efforts; and

Whereas, cognizant of his lifelong commitment to excellence, the Senate takes great pleasure in recognizing Ty Corbin on being selected as the new head coach of the Utah Jazz basketball team, and the members look forward with anticipation to hearing of his future accomplishments. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, congratulate Columbia native Tyrone Corbin on his recent appointment as head coach of the National Basketball Association's Utah Jazz and wish him much fulfillment and success in the days to come.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be provided to Tyrone Corbin.
