Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate are delighted to learn that Sarah Mae Pope of Ninety Six will celebrate her one hundredth birthday on April 1, 2016; and

Whereas, born on April 1, 1916, in the early part of the twentieth century, she has witnessed many remarkable social changes, technological advancements, and international developments that have spanned the globe from that time into the second decade of the twenty-first century; and

Whereas, Sarah Mae Pope was born in the Greenwood, and together with her beloved husband, the late Carroll Pope, Sr., she reared four children: Lizzie Mae Scurry, Geneva Minyard, John Willie Pope, and Jessie James Pope and two stepchildren, Carroll Pope, Jr., and Christine Lark. These children blessed her with fourteen grandchildren, twenty-four great-grandchildren, and thirteen great-great-grandchildren; and

Whereas, a faithful member of Enoree Zion Baptist Church, she still enjoys singing, praying, and praising the Lord and relishes her status as the mother of the church, as well as its oldest member; and

Whereas, in earlier years Mrs. Pope loved cooking, gardening, sewing, canning, and providing for her family and friends, and today she enjoys the company of her family and friends; and

Whereas, Mrs. Pope taught the basics of mathematics through her example by adding the values of love and hard work to her life; subtracting a can't-do attitude from her mind; multiplying these concepts in her home, church, and community; and dividing them among her children; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate are pleased to honor this daughter of South Carolina at the celebration of her one hundredth birthday and join with her family and friends in congratulating her on reaching this extraordinary centennial milestone. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:
