INVITATIONS AND MEMORIAL RESOLUTIONS

To whom was referred a Concurrent Resolution (S. 1217) to request that the Department of Transportation name the intersection of Highway 276 and Highway 288 (Pumpkintown Highway) in northern Greenville County "Dr. James E. Barnett Intersection", etc., respectfully

REPORT:

That they have duly and carefully considered the same and recommend that the same do pass:

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO REQUEST THAT THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION NAME THE INTERSECTION OF HIGHWAY 276 AND HIGHWAY 288 (PUMPKINTOWN HIGHWAY) IN NORTHERN GREENVILLE COUNTY "DR. JAMES E. BARNETT INTERSECTION" AND ERECT APPROPRIATE MARKERS OR SIGNS AT THE INTERSECTION CONTAINING THIS DESIGNATION.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina General Assembly are pleased to recognize Dr. James E. Barnett for his dedicated public service to the people and the State of South Carolina; and

Whereas, Dr. James E. Barnett was born on November 2, 1926, and graduated from Marietta High School, Clemson University, and the Medical University of South Carolina. He entered the military in February 1945 and served during World War II as part of the occupational forces in Japan; and

Whereas, Dr. Barnett began his lifelong career with the Travelers Rest Family Clinic as a family physician in 1955. With an extension of the clinic telephone in his own home, Dr. Barnett served his community both night and day, saving the lives of many through his meticulous, careful methods; and

Whereas, a civic leader, Dr. Barnett campaigned for his community to incorporate and lobbied for public water and sewage systems. He served as mayor of Travelers Rest for two terms and ultimately achieved such a sewer system. He also worked to establish a branch of the Greenville Hospital System in Travelers Rest; and

Whereas, Dr. Barnett served on the governing board of the Western Carolina Regional Sewer Authority for nineteen years and as chairman for five; and

Whereas, a man of faith, he is a member of the Travelers Rest United Methodist Church; and

Whereas, Dr. Barnett married his wife, Lee Barnett, in September of 1950. Together, they have four children, James Earle Barnett, Jr., Lesha Kathryn Nix, Kimberly Susan Elliott, and the late Melanie Ann Barnett; and

Whereas, it would be fitting and proper to pay tribute to this distinguished son of South Carolina by naming an intersection in northern Greenville County in his honor. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly request that the Department of Transportation name the intersection of Highway 276 and Highway 288 (Pumpkintown Highway) in northern Greenville County "Dr. James E. Barnett Intersection" and erect appropriate markers or signs at the intersection containing this designation.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Dr. James E. Barnett and the Department of Transportation.
