A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR SETH BEER OF THE CLEMSON UNIVERSITY BASEBALL TEAM ON BEING NAMED WINNER OF THE 2016 DICK HOWSER TROPHY AND FOR HIS OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTIONS TO CLEMSON BASEBALL.

Whereas, the South Carolina General Assembly is pleased to learn that Seth Beer of the Clemson University baseball team was selected to receive the 2016 Dick Howser Trophy. He was the first freshman in the country to win the award, the most coveted in collegiate baseball; and

Whereas, presented by the St. Petersburg Area Chamber of Commerce, the Dick Howser Trophy is a national sponsorship created to promote baseball excellence and scholastic achievement for collegiate baseball. As the baseball equivalent of the Heisman Trophy, the Dick Howser Trophy is the most prestigious annual national award for the most outstanding collegiate baseball player. The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association votes for the recipient based on nominees' performance, character, leadership, and courage; and

Whereas, Seth Beer's baseball performance clearly more than qualifies him as worthy of the Dick Howser recognition as National Player of the Year. For the 2016 season, he was among the top three in virtually every ACC hitting statistic with 18 home runs (tops in the conference and the most by a freshman in school history), 70 runs batted in (second overall), .700 slugging percentage (second), .535 on-base percentage (second), 2.29 total bases per game (second), and .369 (eighth in the ACC). This 2016 ACC Player and Freshman Hitter of the Year also was among national leaders in numerous batting categories. His .535 on-base percentage was fourth in NCAA Division I individual stats. His 62 bases on balls ranked third nationally and second in the conference, while his 18-homer total was tied for thirteenth nationally, along with leading the league. His 70 RBI was ninth nationally, while he was twenty-first in RBI per game with a 1.13 average over 62 contests in which he competed. His .700 slugging percentage was ninth in NCAA Division I individually; and

Whereas, his other achievements and awards are extensive. He was named national Freshman of the Year by Baseball America, College Sports Madness, D1Baseball, and Perfect Game, making him Clemson's first national Freshman of the Year. Further, he was named First Team All-American by ABCA, Baseball America, College Sports Madness, D1Baseball, NCBWA, and Perfect Game, making him the first Tiger freshman in history to earn First Team All-America honors. He was ACC Player of the Year (the first freshman to win this award), as well as ACC Freshman of the Year. He was also a First-Team All-ACC selection, All-ACC Academic selection, and ACC Academic Honor Roll member; and

Whereas, after graduating a semester early from high school and enrolling at Clemson, Seth burst onto the college scene as one of the best baseball players in the nation. During his 2016 freshman season, he lived up to his reputation, and his 2017 performance shows equal promise, as, for example, he presently leads his team in homeruns and runs batted in. The standout-swimmer-turned-slugger now plays outfield and first base for Clemson; and

Whereas, the General Assembly takes great pleasure in commending this fine young athlete for his excellent work, and the members look forward with great anticipation to seeing him continue his stellar performance for Clemson baseball. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, recognize and honor Seth Beer of the Clemson University baseball team on being named winner of the 2016 Dick Howser Trophy and for his outstanding contributions to Clemson baseball.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Seth Beer.
