A SENATE RESOLUTION

TO EXPRESS THE PROFOUND SORROW OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA SENATE UPON THE PASSING OF HAYES F. SAMUELS, JR., AND TO EXTEND THEIR DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate were deeply saddened to learn of the death of Hayes F. Samuels, Jr. on Wednesday, January 17, 2018 at the age of seventy-four; and

Whereas, Hayes F. Samuels, Jr. was born on October 23, 1943 in Sumter, South Carolina, a son of the late Hayes F. Samuels, Sr. and LaNelle Jackson Samuels. He graduated from Manning Training School, Boylan-Haven Mather Academy, and Eckels College of Mortuary Science in Philadelphia and attended Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte; and

Whereas, Mr. Samuels had been in the funeral business since 1964. A second-generation mortician, he was the owner and director of Samuels Funeral Home of Manning, which his father founded in the 1940s. Mr. Samuels was also a co-owner of Samuels Richardson Funeral Home in Lake City; and

Whereas, Mr. Samuels served as the Coroner of Clarendon County for fourteen years. He was a true professional in every sense of the word and brought great honor to the office in performing his duties with excellence, dignity, and compassion; and

Whereas, an active member of his community, Mr. Samuels helped to organize, motivate, stimulate, and educate youth; helped citizens obtain employment; contributed to area churches; sponsored a youth basketball team; worked to improve race relations; and sponsored students attending college. He was also a coach for Walker Gamble High School and a Manning High School MAC Corporate Sponsor. Mr. Samuels also served with a number of organizations, including the Sixth Congressional District Morticians Association; Clarendon County Memorial Hospital; South Carolina Mortician Association Convention; Baby Shirley L. Whack Liver Transplant Fund; Concerned Citizens for Primary Health Care; South Carolina State Board of Funeral Service; NBSC Advisory Board; South Carolina Mortician Association; National Morticians Association; Epsilon Nu Delta Mortuary Fraternity; Clarendon Branch of the NAACP; and Spring Hill Masonic Lodge #188; and

Whereas, Mr. Samuels received many honors and awards throughout his life, including Clarendon County's 2017 Business Person of the Year, recognition for outstanding and dedicated service by the Clarendon County Ministerial Alliance, "Pride Man" of the Year by Clemson University in 1999, the NCNW Award for Business and Economics, and the United American Freewill Baptist Award; and

Whereas, Mr. Samuels was a lifetime member of Trinity AME Church, where he served as class leader, steward, chairman of the Men's Club, and, for thirty-three years, trustee; and

Whereas, a loving husband, he was married to Yvonne James Samuels; and

Whereas, an avid Christian, businessman, civic worker, and friend, Mr. Samuels was known by many as devoted, dynamic, hard-working, and loyal. He will be greatly missed. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, express their profound sorrow upon the passing of Hayes F. Samuels, Jr., and extend their deepest sympathy to his family and many friends.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Hayes F. Samuels, Jr.
