A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE DR. J. POWELL SMITH UPON THE OCCASION OF HIS RETIREMENT, TO COMMEND HIM FOR HIS MANY YEARS OF OUTSTANDING PUBLIC SERVICE WITH THE CLEMSON COOPERATIVE EXTENSION, AND TO WISH HIM CONTINUED SUCCESS IN ALL HIS FUTURE ENDEAVORS.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives are pleased to recognize Dr. J. Powell Smith, upon the occasion of his retirement, for his significant contributions to the State of South Carolina's agricultural industry; and

Whereas, Dr. J. Powell Smith graduated from the University of Georgia with a bachelor of science in agriculture in 1979 and with a master's degree in plant protection and pest management in 1984. In 2003, he received a doctor of philosophy in entomology from Clemson University; and

Whereas, a recognized leader among his peers throughout the Southeast, Dr. Smith has worked for the Clemson Cooperative Extension as a field agent, state vegetable researcher, and state lead vegetable agent since 1995. During his time with the extension, he has worked with vegetable and small fruit producers to help them develop and implement new technologies, production practices, post-production handling improvements, food-safety processes, pest-management practices, and other aspects of production; and

Whereas, Dr. Smith has led and assisted many research projects at local, state, and national levels to solve production problems in the fresh vegetable industry in South Carolina and the Southeast. Much of his research has resulted in higher-quality crops with fewer inputs, and many of his projects have led to on-farm demonstrations benefiting South Carolina producers; and

Whereas, Dr. Smith is active in the South Carolina Entomological Society, the South Carolina Association of County Agricultural Agents, the Entomology Society of America, and the American Phytopathological Society. He is also a certified crop advisor with the American Society of Agronomy; and

Whereas, a highly respected innovator in the South Carolina fruit and vegetable industry, Dr. Smith enjoys helping solve grower problems, mentoring younger professionals, and learning new things; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives are grateful for the dedication and commitment that J. Powell Smith has shown in serving the people and the State of South Carolina. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, congratulate Dr. J. Powell Smith upon the occasion of his retirement, commend him for his many years of outstanding public service with the Clemson Cooperative Extension, and wish him continued success in all his future endeavors.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Dr. J. Powell Smith.
