A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR CHARLES PERRY, EDITOR OF THE CAROLINA FOREST CHRONICLE AND THE NORTH STRAND NEWS AND DIGITAL EDITOR OF MYHORRYNEWS.COM, AND TO CONGRATULATE HIM FOR BEING NAMED THE SOUTH CAROLINA WEEKLY JOURNALIST OF THE YEAR.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives are pleased to learn that Charles Perry was honored as the South Carolina Weekly Journalist of the Year by the South Carolina Press Association on Saturday April 6, 2019; and

Whereas, a native of Loris, he graduated from Conway Christian School and earned a bachelor's degree in mass communication from Winthrop University. He has spent about half of his career with daily newspapers and the other half with weekly newspapers; and

Whereas, now thirty-five years old, Mr. Perry credits his parents; his high school journalism teacher, Margaret Locklair; his wife, Jennifer; and his coworkers with his journalistic success, that is, he credits almost everyone but himself; and

Whereas, in a tireless pursuit to inform his community, Mr. Perry has worked seven days and seven nights a week for newspapers and magazines across the Palmetto State, covering the gamut of natural disasters, including hurricanes, floods, tornadoes, and ice storms. His profiles have featured a broad spectrum of the community as well: rodeo cowboys, race car drivers, farmers, and rappers; and

Whereas, his unique voice in journalism, gift for storytelling, strong ethics and tenacity for the truth has made a difference in the lives of his readers; and

Whereas, serving as the editor of the Carolina Forest Chronicle and the North Strand News and as the digital editor of myhorrynews.com, Mr. Perry has won nearly one hundred awards for his journalism, including national honors for investigative reporting, feature writing, and community-service journalism; and

Whereas, residents of Carolina Forest have benefited from Mr. Perry's exceptional journalistic writing, such as his reporting and analysis of major financial issues and coverage of Hurricane Florence and of Horry County's land deals and infrastructure issues; and

Whereas, under his editorship, the Carolina Forest Chronicle received first place in 2017 for community service from the National Newspaper Association for coverage of police misconduct; and

Whereas, on four separate occasions, newspapers edited by Mr. Perry have won the top prize for general excellence in the annual news contest of the South Carolina Press Association; and

Whereas, the South Carolina House of Representatives appreciates the outstanding journalism and integrity that Charles Perry provides to his community's reading audience, and the members are pleased to commend him upon being named the South Carolina Weekly Journalist of the Year by the South Carolina Press Association. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize and honor Charles Perry, editor of the Carolina Forest Chronicle and the North Strand News and digital editor of myhorrynews.com, and congratulate him for being named the South Carolina Weekly Journalist of the Year.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Charles Perry.
