A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO EXPRESS PROFOUND SORROW UPON THE PASSING OF DR. LOWRY PRICE WARE OF DUE WEST, TO CELEBRATE HIS LIFE AND ACHIEVEMENTS, AND TO EXTEND THE DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives were deeply saddened to learn of the death of Dr. Lowry Price Ware of Due West on Monday, February 8, 2021, at the venerable age of ninety-two; and

Whereas, born on September 17, 1928, Dr. Ware was the third of five children born to the late Charlie B. Ware and the late Ruby Price Ware. An incredibly intelligent boy with an insatiable appetite for reading, he attended Due West public schools before going on to earn a history degree from Erskine College in 1949. Later, he attended the University of South Carolina earning a master's degree and a PhD. His doctoral dissertation was on William E. Dodd's academic career; and

Whereas, when Dr. Ware returned to Erskine in 1954, it was as a member of the history department. He spent over thirty years as a dedicated and beloved professor, until his retirement in 1987. Not one to rest for long, he wrote and edited books well into his eighties which continue to serve as a fount of convenient and invaluable resources for historians and genealogists; and

Whereas, during his academic career Lowry was elected to Phi Beta Kappa, the most prestigious academic distinction in the United States. He served for many years as an officer in the Phi Beta Kappa regional society; and

Whereas, as a man of faith, Dr. Ware was a lifelong member of the Due West Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church. Giving of his time and talents, he served the church as a deacon, Clerk of Session, an Elder, and by teaching Sunday school for decades. Always willing to help as he could, he supported many congregational activities for over five decades; and

Whereas, preceded in death by his parents and three siblings, Charlie B. Ware, Jr., Allen E. Ware, and Mabel Ware Baggett. Dr. Lowry Price Ware leaves to cherish his memory his brother, Gene R. Ware, his nine nieces and nephews, and a host of other family and friends. He will be greatly missed by all who had the privilege and pleasure of knowing him. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, express profound sorrow upon the passing of Dr. Lowry Price Ware of Due West, celebrate his life and achievements, and extend the deepest sympathy to his family and many friends.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Dr. Lowry Price Ware.
