A SENATE RESOLUTION

TO EXPRESS PROFOUND SORROW UPON THE PASSING OF DR. MARY ELIZABETH ASHLEY-LIVINGSTON AND TO EXTEND THE DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HER FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate were deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Dr. Mary Elizabeth Ashley-Livingston on January 6, 2022; and

Whereas, a native of Perry, Dr. Ashley-Livingston was born on December 4, 1950 to parents Clyde Ashley and Quincy Marie Ashley; and

Whereas, she earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from Benedict College in 1973. She then received her Master of Arts degree in Elementary Education and Teaching from the University of South Carolina--Upstate in 1978 and a second Master of Arts degree in School Administration and Supervision from the University of South Carolina--Columbia in 1989. In 2005, she earned a Doctor of Education degree in Elementary and Middle School Administration and Principalship from Nova Southeastern University; and

Whereas, Dr. Ashley-Livingston began her career in education as an elementary school science teacher. She then worked as an assistant principal, principal, and school district administrator before retiring in February 2007; and

Whereas, upon retirement, Dr. Ashley-Livingston entered a second career as a grant writer and educational consultant. The great joy of her grant-writing career was writing the grant to build the Samaria Sunday School Union, Inc. building in her hometown of Perry. In addition to this grant, Dr. Ashley-Livingston worked closely with the Samaria Sunday School Union, Inc. as a member of the executive board and as a constant supporter; and

Whereas, a civic leader, Dr. Ashley-Livingston served with many community organizations, including the Baltimore Benedict Club. At the time of her death, she served as the president of the Baltimore Benedict Club, where her last act was to moderate the December Club meeting and send heartfelt Christmas greetings to all members; and

Whereas, Dr. Ashley-Livingston leaves to cherish her memory four children, Arlene, Marlene, Levan, and Christopher; one bonus daughter, Lizbeth; three grandchildren, Norman Coray, Crissondra Lee, and D'Aleczandria; two sisters, Essie Lou Ashley and Audrey Ashley; and many nieces, nephews, and other family members and friends. She will be greatly missed. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, express profound sorrow upon the passing of Dr. Mary Elizabeth Ashley-Livingston and extend the deepest sympathy to her family and many friends.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Dr. Mary Elizabeth Ashley-Livingston.
