A senate RESOLUTION

 

TO CONGRATULATE Jack Merritt Edwards ON THE OCCASION OF HIS one hundredth BIRTHDAY AND TO WISH HIM A JOYOUS BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION AND MUCH HAPPINESS IN THE DAYS AHEAD.

 

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate are pleased to learn that Jack Merritt Edwards celebrated this important milestone on April 11, 2026; and

 

Whereas, a native of Sumter, Mr. Edwards was born on April 11, 1926, to parents James Merritt and Georgia Anna Edwards. He is a 1944 graduate of Kingstree High School and an alumnus of The Citadel; and

 

Whereas, a veteran of the United States Navy, Mr. Edwards began his service as a Radioman First Class in the Pacific Theater in 1944 and served for one year in Kobe, Japan after the Japanese surrender in 1945; and

 

Whereas, after his military service and graduation from the Citadel, Mr. Edwards began his career in real estate. He owned Edwards Insurance and Real Estate, retiring at the age of eighty-one; and

 

Whereas, a civic leader, Mr. Edwards has served with many community organizations, including the Kingstree Town Council, the Williamsburg County School Board, Kingstree Kiwanis and Rotary Clubs as past president, Rotary International as a Paul Harris Fellow, and the South Carolina Independent Insurance Agents Association as past president. Additionally, he served on the Board of Visitors of Francis Marion University, The Exchange Bank of South Carolina Board, and First Citizens Bank of South Carolina Board; and

 

Whereas, a devout Christian, he is a lifelong member of Williamsburg Presbyterian Church, where he served as an elder, choir member, and Sunday school teacher; and

 

Whereas, Mr. Edwards was married to the late Julia Puckett Edwards, and together, they had two children; and

 

Whereas, the South Carolina Senate takes great pleasure in honoring this son of South Carolina at the celebration of his one hundredth birthday and is pleased to join with his family and friends in congratulating him.  Now, therefore,

 

Be it resolved by the Senate:

 

That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, congratulate Jack Merritt Edwards on the occasion of his hundredth birthday and wish him a joyous birthday celebration and much happiness in the days ahead.

 

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Jack Merritt Edwards.
