VERSIONS OF THIS BILL

06/25/2026

A senate RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE Flat Creek Baptist Church UPON THE OCCASION OF ITS Two hundred fiftieth ANNIVERSARY AND TO COMMEND the church FOR ITS two and a half centuries OF DEDICATED SERVICE TO THE Lancaster COMMUNITY AND THE PEOPLE AND THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate are pleased to recognize Flat Creek Baptist Church as it celebrates this important milestone; and

Whereas, first organized on July 4, 1776, Flat Creek Baptist Church will celebrate its historic two hundred fiftieth anniversary in 2026, sharing its venerable founding date and anniversary with our beloved country; and

Whereas, the fledgling church was first organized and led by Reverend George Pope, a native of Virginia. Flat Creek Baptist held its first meetings in a brush arbor on its present site and was known as the Upper Fork of Lynches Creek until it was renamed in 1881; and

Whereas, Flat Creek's first permanent sanctuary, a log building, was replaced by a frame sanctuary that was lost to fire in 1912. The sanctuary was rebuilt in 1913 and once again in 1943 under the leadership of Pastor L. W. Edwards. The church also hosts its own cemetery in a tranquil spot across the road from the sanctuary; and

Whereas, located at the intersection of Old Jefferson Highway and Victory Road, this charming church is easy to spot by the historical marker on church property. The marker, erected in 1997 by the Lancaster County Historical Commission, features a short history of Flat Creek Baptist; and

Whereas, Flat Creek's congregation continues to uphold the church's longstanding legacy through liturgy, ministry, and service under current the pastor, Reverend Bart Miles, who has served as pastor for over twelve years. Flat Creek is an active member of the Moriah Baptist Association and the South Carolina Baptist Convention; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate greatly appreciate the dedication and commitment of Flat Creek Baptist Church to serving the people and the State of South Carolina.  Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, congratulate Flat Creek Baptist Church upon the occasion of its two hundred fiftieth anniversary and commend the church for its many years of dedicated service to the Lancaster community and the people and the State of South Carolina.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Reverend Bart Miles.
