Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate are pleased to recognize the Town of Briarcliffe Acres as it celebrates this important milestone; and
Whereas, Briarcliffe Acres is coastal town in Horry County located between Myrtle Beach and North Myrtle Beach. The town has a land area of less than one square mile, and hosts less than five hundred residents and two hundred forty-five homes within the town limits; and ; and
Whereas, Kenneth C. Ellsworth purchased the majority of what would later become Briarcliff Acres in 1946 with the vision of developing a retirement community. This land was incorporated into the Briarcliffe Acres Association, which was formally activated in 1966; and
Whereas, an election to decide incorporation of the town was later held on February 17, 1976, with strong civic participation from both sides. One hundred twenty-six votes were cast in favor of incorporation and eighty-six were opposed. Results were certified on February 25, 1976, by the Secretary of State; and
Whereas, A.L. Emptage was elected as the town's first mayor and Robert P. Donnell, Laura Jean Passow, Warren N. Riker, and Maurice Washburn were elected as the town council on November 16, 1976 and were allowed to assume their official duties on December 8th of the same year; and
Whereas, the town expanded to include the Lutheran Church of the Risen Christ in 1977, and over time included named streets, and paved and named roads, and professional police officers; and
Whereas, Briarcliffe Acres also hosts many natural wonders. The town was named a Bird Sanctuary in 1973 by the General Assembly, and Habitat Park was designated a Community Wildlife Habitat by the National Wildlife Foundation in 2006, the nineteenth community in the country to receive such an honor; and
Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate greatly appreciate the dedication and commitment of the citizens and leadership of Briarcliffe Acres to serving the people and the State of South Carolina. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate:
