A concurrent RESOLUTION
TO APPROVE THE PROPOsed Design and Location FOR THE Robert smalls MONUMENT, as required by Act 183 of 2024, which was approved BY THE STATE HOUSE COMMITTEE.
Whereas, the Robert Smalls Monument Commission reported a proposed design and location for the monument to the State House Committee for approval; and
Whereas, the sculptor selected is Mr. Basil Watson of Lawrenceville, Georgia; and
Whereas, the design contains biographical information about Robert Smalls as well as a quote from Robert Smalls; and
Whereas, the proposed location is the northeast quadrant of the State House grounds between the Spanish-American War Veterans Monument and the African American History Monument adjacent to the circular sidewalk that surrounds the State House; and
Whereas, the State House Committee has approved the commission's proposed monument design and location. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, as required by Act 183 of 2024, approves the design and location for the Robert Smalls Monument proposed by the Robert Smalls Monument Commission to the State House Committee, and approved by the State House Committee.
Be it further resolved that, as set forth in Act 183 of 2024, the Robert Smalls Monument Commission shall raise private funds and receive gifts and grants to carry out its purpose of designing, locating, and erecting the Robert Smalls Monument.
