________
A concurrent RESOLUTION
to request the department of transportation name the portion of Harristown Road from its intersection with Mendell Rivers Road to its intersection with Harris Lane in the Town of St. Stephen in Berkeley County "J.B. Harris Memorial Highway" and erect appropriate signs or markers at this location containing these words.
Whereas, J.B. Harris Jr. was born in St. Stephen on September 19, 1942, the son of Joe Britt Harris and Mazie Smith Harris. A devout Christian, he was a member of Harristown Road Baptist Church, where he was a former Sunday school superintendent, usher, and a trustee; and
Whereas, his working career at Albany International, a leading materials science developer, spanned thirty-seven years. Always one to give back to his community, Harris served with the St. Stephen Volunteer Fire Department, was a former volunteer for the St. Stephen EMS, a former member of the Berkeley County Rescue Squad, and the church disaster relief team. He responded to victims of Hurricane Katrina in Texas and Mississippi, as well as Hurricane Sandy in New Jersey, and hurricanes Bonnie, Isaac, and Irene in Florida; and
Whereas, an avid gardener, Harris grew vegetables in his spare time which he delivered to the elderly and disabled. He enjoyed collecting cars, golfing, and gardening, but he especially loved people and visiting; and
Whereas, on August 29, 1964, he wed Ellen Cannon Harris, a marriage that lasted fifty-seven years and produced four children, a daughter, Michelle H. Owens, and three sons-Kenny R. Harris, Joe B. "Joey" Harris III, and Stacy D. Harris. The family also includes seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; and
Whereas, with a legacy steeped in service to God, family, and his community, it is only fitting and proper that this native son of the Palmetto State is remembered with a portion of highway in the Town of St. Stephen named in his memory. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, request the Department of Transportation name the portion of Harristown Road from its intersection with Mendell Rivers Road to its intersection with Harris Lane in the Town of St. Stephen in Berkeley County "J.B. Harris Memorial Highway" and erect appropriate signs or markers at this location containing these words.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Department of Transportation.
