A house RESOLUTION

to express profound sorrow of the members of the south carolina house of representatives upon the passing of Bob Hanna and to extend the deepest sympathy to his family and many friends.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives were deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Bob Hanna on March 6, 2026; and

Whereas, the football community has lost a respected coach and mentor. Longtime Irmo High School football coach and athletic director, Bob Hanna, leaves behind a legacy of mentorship and excellence that touched the lives of countless players and coaches, and he became widely recognized as a cornerstone of the Irmo football community; and

Whereas, before moving to South Carolina in 1994, Coach Hanna spent more than a decade coaching in the North Carolina high school system where he led five different programs. He is best known, however, for his twenty-year tenure at Irmo High School, where he served as head football coach and athletic director. Under his leadership, the Yellow Jackets won nine regional titles, and appeared in state Class AAAA championship games in 2002, 2004, and 2006. By the end of his tenure at Irmo in 2013, Coach Hanna had amassed a record of 163-93, and according to Principal David Riegel, was regarded as "an icon in South Carolina athletics and in the Irmo community"; and

Whereas, Coach Hanna wasn't quite finished however. He returned to North Carolina in 2014 as head coach at West Brunswick High School. He joined the coaching staff at Conway High School in 2015 and completed his career as an assistant coach at James Island High School. Following thirty-six years as a head coach, Hanna's overall record stood at a remarkable 262-176-2; and

Whereas, Hanna was named Midlands Area Coach of the Year five times, was the 2014 South Carolina Athletic Administrators' Association Class AAAA Athletic Director of the Year, and in 2019, he was inducted into the South Carolina Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame; and

Whereas, Coach Hanna was known for teaching discipline, character, and toughness, leaving a lasting impact on generations of student athletes. He dedicated much of his life to the game of football and to the young men he coached, leading with heart and earning the respect of players, fellow coaches, and the community; and

Whereas, Coach Hanna's leadership influenced countless individuals over the course of more than four decades. His belief in his players and his example helped shape not only successful athletes but responsible men. His leadership extended beyond the football field as he sought to encourage young people to grow, lead, and do the right thing; and

Whereas, Coach Hanna leaves a profound void within the South Carolina high school athletic community and in the lives of those who learned invaluable lessons under his guidance. After more than forty years of shaping young lives and building successful programs, he leaves behind his loved ones, friends, fellow coaches and former players who mourn his passing, but will continue to honor his enduring legacy. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, express their profound sorrow upon the passing of Bob Hanna and extend the deepest sympathy to his family and many friends.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Coach Bob Hanna.
