VERSIONS OF THIS BILL
A house RESOLUTION
to honor and recognize the Fearless Individuals Reaching Excellence Youth Coalition for being named the 2026 National Group Youth Advocates of the Year by the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids.
Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives were pleased to learn that the Fearless Individuals Reaching Excellence (FIRE) Youth Coalition was named the 2026 National Group Youth Advocates of the Year by the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids; and
Whereas, the Group Youth Advocates of the Year Award recognizes a leading United States-based youth coalition that works to protect their peers and community from tobacco use and nicotine addiction and demonstrates the collective power of youth working together to drive meaningful change; and
Whereas, led by Vincent Sanders, FIRE Squad is a dedicated group of youth advocates working to reduce tobacco use and its devastating consequences in all South Carolina communities. Having witnessed the impact of tobacco use and nicotine addiction on their schools and families, they are driven to create change; and
Whereas, alarmed by the widespread use of electronic cigarettes in their schools and an influx of tobacco and vape shops in their communities, FIRE Squad members strive to educate their communities about these problems, as well as advocate for local policymakers to act. Their efforts led the Orangeburg City Council to pass an ordinance restricting tobacco retailers near schools, childcare centers, recreation facilities, and other youth-focused spaces; and
Whereas, they partnered with other organizations to host "Escape the Haze," the first statewide, youth-led conference on vaping, which brought together one hundred and forty-two students from across South Carolina. Their efforts also generated media coverage about these issues and FIRE Squad's proposed solutions. FIRE Squad also has hosted school and community events educating young people and parents about the dangers of electronic cigarettes and other tobacco products; and
Whereas, members Jeremiah Morgan, Synaya Thompson and PJ Hubbard will represent the FIRE Squad at the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids 2026 Youth Advocates of the Year awards in May; and
Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives commend the FIRE Squad for their leadership, persistence, and creativity as they work to improve the health of their communities and free South Carolina youth from the grip of tobacco use and nicotine addiction. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, honor and recognize the Fearless Individuals Reaching Excellence Youth Coalition for being named the 2026 National Group Youth Advocates of the Year by the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Fearless Individuals Reaching Excellence Youth Coalition advisor Vincent Sanders.
