________

A concurrent RESOLUTION

TO REQUEST THAT THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION NAME Gapway Drainage Bridge on US 76 IN horry COUNTY "Zachary Kyle Strickland bridge" AND ERECT APPROPRIATE MARKERS OR SIGNS AT THIS LOCATION CONTAINING THE DESIGNATION.

Whereas, a native of Nichols, Zachary Kyle Strickland was born on July 28, 1928 to parents Jerry and Marsha Strickland. He was a friendly and adventurous child who loved to explore his surroundings. Growing up, Zachary enjoyed hunting, fishing, and playing sports, but his greatest passion was riding and training horses on his family's farm in Horry County. Some of his fondest memories were made while fishing with his younger brother, Zane, and their parents; and

Whereas, on May 9, 1997, Zachary was involved in a serious automobile accident. He sustained numerous devastating injuries that left him a quadriplegic. Tragically, complications from these injuries ultimately led to his death on August 8, 2005; and

Whereas, after eight years of thorough investigation, it was revealed that the vehicle Zachary was driving had three critical defects: faulty brakes, seatbelts, and door latches. As a result of these findings, vehicle manufacturers have since implemented safer practices in their designs, saving countless lives; and

Whereas, it would be only fitting and proper to pay tribute to this son of South Carolina by naming a portion of road in the State in his honor. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, request that the Department of Transportation name Gapway Drainage Bridge on US 76 in Horry County "Zachary Kyle Strickland Bridge" and erect appropriate markers or signs at this location containing the designation.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Department of Transportation and presented to the family of Zachary Kyle Strickland.
