A senate RESOLUTION

 

TO CONGRATULATE the journal FOR winning several South Carolina Press Association awards, including the top award in General Excellence.

 

Whereas, the South Carolina Senate is pleased to learn that The Journal has been awarded several South Carolina Press Association awards, including the top award in General Excellence; and

 

Whereas, in print since 1904, The Journal is an award-winning newspaper published by the Edwards Group in Seneca. With five editions a week, Tuesday through Saturday, The Journal is the foremost news source for Oconee and western Pickens Counties; and

 

Whereas, The Journal provides coverage on crime, politics, news, sports, community events, local business, obituaries, and more through print and online e-editions; and

 

Whereas, for the second year in a row, and for the fourth time in recent history, The Journal has earned the prestigious First Place Award for General Excellence; and

 

Whereas, the South Carolina Press Association gives out the General Excellence award each year during the annual news contest to the publication demonstrating excellence in every aspect of journalism, including content, writing, design, editing, headlines, use of photographs, editorial page quality, sports, and lifestyle coverage. The Journal earned the blue ribbon for Division C, which includes small daily newspapers, and The Journal's reporters and paginators also earned fourteen individual awards in multiple categories; and

 

Whereas, the many individual awards The Journal won this year include first place in the Page One Design category, won by Robert Miller; first place for Feature Photo, second place for General News Photo, and third place for General News Photo, all won by Sean Smith; third place for Government Beat Reporting, won by Lauren Pierce; third place for Profile Feature Writing, won by Evan Smoak; third place for Sports Feature Story, won by Eric Sprott; second place for Sports Feature Story, won by Ian Taylor; and second place in the Sports Action Photo category and second place in the Sports Feature Photo category, won by Caleb Gilbert; and

 

Whereas, the Senate is grateful for The Journal's dedicated service to the people and the State of South Carolina and takes great pleasure in saluting The Journal for receiving several South Carolina Press Association awards, including the top award in General Excellence.  Now, therefore,

 

Be it resolved by the Senate:

 

That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, congratulate The Journal for winning several South Carolina Press Association awards, including the top award in General Excellence.

 

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to the COO of the Edwards Group, owner of The Journal, Hal Welch.
