TO AMEND SECTION 1-11-144, CODE OF LAWS OF SOUTH CAROLINA, 1976, RELATING TO HEALTH AND DENTAL INSURANCE COVERAGE FOR REGIONAL TOURISM PROMOTION COMMISSIONS, SO AS TO DELETE THE REQUIREMENT THAT THE COVERAGE IS PROVIDED THROUGH THE RETIREMENT SYSTEM AND TO PROVIDE FOR COVERAGE FOR COUNTY MENTAL RETARDATION BOARDS FUNDED BY THE STATE MENTAL RETARDATION DEPARTMENT.
Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina:
SECTION 1. Section 1-11-144 of the 1976 Code, as added by Act 73 of 1989, is amended to read:
"Section 1-11-144. The Budget and Control Board through the South Carolina Retirement System is authorized to may provide health and dental insurance coverage to regional tourism promotion commissions funded by the Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism and to county mental retardation boards funded by the State Mental Retardation Department under the State Health Insurance Plan. The employer may obtain coverage by applying to the board and by complying with the requirements established by the board. However, the benefits of the plan must be the same as those provided to state and school district employees. An employer electing to participate in the State Health Insurance Plan shall agree to participate for a minimum of two years. The board may adjust the premium rates during the coverage period based on experience."
SECTION 2. This act takes effect upon approval by the Governor.
