A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO EXPRESS THE STRONG BELIEF OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF SOUTH CAROLINA THAT THE MOUNTAIN DEW SOUTHERN 500 AND THE CAROLINA DODGE DEALERS 400 SHOULD REMAIN AT THE DARLINGTON RACEWAY AS FEATURED ATTRACTIONS DURING THE SAME YEAR.

Whereas, Harold Brasington took a dream and made it a reality by building the Darlington Raceway in 1949; and

Whereas, the first race at Darlington Raceway took place on Labor Day in 1950 with the inaugural Southern 500 which was won by Johnny Mantz; and

Whereas, over the next fifty years, drivers like Baker, Flock, Thomas, Pearson, Yarborough, Petty, and Earnhardt have become commonplace in Victory Lane at Darlington; and

Whereas, Darlington Raceway is known throughout the United States as the original super speedway and as one of the pillars of NASCAR; and

Whereas, no other sporting facility in the world is more steeped in history and tradition than the Darlington Raceway; and

Whereas, known as the track that is "Too Tough to Tame", Darlington Raceway has also improved over time. The track continues to keep pace with the booming NASCAR world of the new century while standing as a monument to the drivers and loyal fans; and

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly wholeheartedly believe two annual NASCAR events at the Darlington Raceway should be held for many years to come. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly, by this resolution, express their strong belief that the Mountain Dew Southern 500 and the Carolina Dodge Dealers 400 should remain at the Darlington Raceway as featured attractions during the same year.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the President of Darlington Raceway.
