VERSIONS OF THIS BILL
EXPRESSING THE SORROW OF THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA UPON THE DEATH OF CHESTER A. RAY, SR. WHOSE PROFESSIONAL LEGACY TO ORANGEBURG COUNTY AND THIS STATE IS A STRONG AND ACCOUNTABLE PUBLIC SCHOOL SYSTEM.
Whereas, Orangeburg County's Chester A. Ray, Sr. died February 22, 2005, in Charleston; and
Whereas, the Ehrhardt native devoted more than forty years to public education in Orangeburg County; and
Whereas, he trained professionally with a B.S. in Mathematics, M.S. in Education, and certification in Guidance and Administration, all from South Carolina State College; and
Whereas, his professional career in education began as a mathematics teacher and progressed through positions as Guidance Counselor, Director of Guidance, and Assistant Principal at Wilkinson High School, Principal of Orangeburg-Wilkinson High School and Belleville Middle School, and Director of Middle Schools and of Accountability for Orangeburg School District 5; and
Whereas, his expertise and experience were enhanced by his membership in the National and South Carolina School Board Associations, the NAACP, and Jack and Jill of America, and his leadership of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity and the Lower Savannah Council of Governments; and
Whereas, he served his community well through the budget committee of the Orangeburg County United Fund, the County Human Relations Committee, and the Parlordale Civic Association; and
Whereas, this faithful and active member of New Mt. Zion Baptist Church is survived by his wife, the former Vivian McMillan, and their five children: Chester Ray, Jr., Derek Ray, Mark Ray, Vilinda Ray, and David Ray; and
Whereas, he is survived further by the good results of his long and dedicated service to Orangeburg County's schools. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the members of the General Assembly express the sorrow of the state of South Carolina upon the death of Chester A. Ray, Sr. whose professional legacy to Orangeburg County and this State is a strong and accountable public school system.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the family of Chester Ray.
