A SENATE RESOLUTION

TO COMMEND TAIWAN FOR ITS CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE GLOBAL ECONOMY AND ITS PROMOTION OF WORLD PEACE, LIBERTY, AND HUMAN RIGHTS, AND TO SUPPORT ITS EFFORTS TO JOIN THE UNITED NATIONS, THE WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION, AND OTHER INTERNATIONAL ORGANIZATIONS.

Whereas, Taiwan and the United States are friends and allies of long standing, both dearly cherishing universal values of freedom, democracy, and human rights; and

Whereas, Taiwan is the world's sixteenth-largest trading entity, the United States' ninth-largest trading partner, and the fifth-largest market for the United States' agricultural products; and

Whereas, the State of South Carolina and Taiwan have enjoyed long-term and mutually beneficial sister-state relations since 1981, with the prospect of further growth, and the State of South Carolina supports a free-trade agreement between the United States and Taiwan; and

Whereas, Taiwan, as a leading manufacturer of information technology products, is an indispensable provider in the global high-tech industry, and its security and stability are vital not only to the economies of the Asia Pacific region but also to the world economy; and

Whereas, Taiwan, as a willing and responsible member of the world community, is one of the most active foreign contributing parties in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and other natural disasters around the globe; and

Whereas, the twenty-three million free citizens of Taiwan are not adequately represented in international organizations such as the World Health Organization and the United Nations. Basic human rights of the Taiwanese people are hindered thereby, and the effectiveness of the World Health Organization and other international organizations is decreased. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, commend Taiwan for its contributions to the global economy and its promotion of world peace, liberty, and human rights, and support its efforts to join the United Nations, the World Health Organization, and other international organizations.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mr. R.C. Wu, Director General of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Atlanta, Georgia.
