A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO COMMEND AND THANK THE FAMILY READINESS GROUP OF TROOP B 202 CAVALRY OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA NATIONAL GUARD, AS WELL AS THOSE WORKING WITH THIS GROUP, FOR RAISING THE FUNDS NECESSARY TO BRING HOME BEAUFORT'S SOUTH CAROLINA NATIONAL GUARD TROOPS BEFORE THEY EMBARK ON A YEAR-LONG DEPLOYMENT TO AFGHANISTAN.

Whereas, Beaufort's South Carolina National Guard troops are currently training in Mississippi and will be deployed to Afghanistan for a year's tour of duty in April 2007; and

Whereas, it is appropriate that these fine men should have an opportunity to see their families once more before the troops' deployment to Afghanistan; and

Whereas, to encourage these men and make possible a family visit for all Beaufort's South Carolina National Guard troops, the Family Readiness Group of Troop B 202 Cavalry of the South Carolina National Guard spearheaded a fundraising effort that has, to date, raised almost twenty thousand dollars to bring these soldiers home by chartered bus for their April leave; and

Whereas, the members of the Family Readiness Group, ably led by Chairperson Mrs. Pam Jezewski and generously aided by Beaufort Councilwoman Donnie Beer, Mr. Elliot Hagan, and Mr. Mike Passanite, owner of Boundary Street Pizzeria, are coordinating the Family Readiness effort with a similar statewide one to bring home to the Palmetto State about eight hundred South Carolina National Guard soldiers who are a part of this same April deployment to Afghanistan; and

Whereas, on their nine-day April leave, seventy-two of the Beaufort unit's approximately one hundred soldiers will ride a bus twelve hours from Camp Shelby, Mississippi, to Beaufort for this last visit home before deployment to Afghanistan, the remaining eighteen soldiers being from other states and choosing other destinations for their leave; and

Whereas, after the men's April transportation to Beaufort and return trip to Mississippi is paid for, the Family Readiness Group will use any excess funds to cover emergency relief for the group's families, holiday gifts and care packages, and the troops' homecoming in 2008; and

Whereas, once again exemplifying the town's strong support of both current and veteran military personnel, the entire community of Beaufort came together and rallied around the soldiers, Beaufort's commitment being a reflection of that of Beaufort County as a whole; and

Whereas, let the people of Beaufort be assured that their fellow South Carolinians greatly appreciate and admire Beaufort's present demonstration of loving their military neighbors as themselves. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, commend and thank the Family Readiness Group of Troop B 202 Cavalry of the South Carolina National Guard, as well as those working with this group, for raising the funds necessary to bring home Beaufort's South Carolina National Guard troops before they embark on a year-long deployment to Afghanistan.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Family Readiness Group of Troop B 202 Cavalry of the South Carolina National Guard.
