A house RESOLUTION

TO EXPRESS THE PROFOUND SORROW OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES UPON THE PASSING OF DR. ANTHONY "TONY" E. HARRIS OF AIKEN COUNTY AND TO EXTEND THEIR DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS LARGE AND LOVING FAMILY AND HIS MANY FRIENDS.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives were saddened to learn of the death of Dr. Anthony "Tony" E. Harris at the age of eighty-one on May 29, 2025; and

Whereas, born in Columbus, Ohio on June 1, 1943, he was the son of the late Dr. and Mrs. Lloyd Edwin Harris. He was reared in Rochester, Minnesota, where his father was a pediatrician at the Mayo Clinic, and it was his father's example that inspired Dr. Harris to become a physician; and

Whereas, he enjoyed his childhood fishing and canoeing on the lakes of Minnesota, pheasant shooting in South Dakota, and playing football, basketball, ice hockey, and golf in high school. He shared his loving home with three siblings, Cynthia Harris Waymouth, Winston Mayhew, and the late Geoffrey Scott Harris; and

Whereas, Dr. Harris graduated from Denison University in 1965 where he was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity and earned a medical degree from Bowman Gray School of Medicine at Wake Forest University in 1969. In that same year, he met his wife-to-be, Sandy Mayhew, whom he married on July 11, 1970; and

Whereas, after serving his country with distinction as a doctor in the United States Airforce, completing his ENT residency program, and teaching academic medicine at the Medical College of Virginia and Johns Hopkins, Dr. Harris settled into private practice in South Carolina and in 1990 made Aiken his permanent home; and

Whereas, dedicated to his neighbors and his community, Dr. Harris enjoyed being a member of Aiken Rotary and Palmetto Golf Club, riding his Harley Davidson, and creating model railroads; and

Whereas, an active and faithful member of All Saints Anglican Church, he sang in the choir and was a member of the Order of the Knights Templar. He loved traveling to Europe with his wife and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren, most often on beach vacations and holidays in England. His life's purpose, above all, was taking care of his patients, which he did to the very end. He lived a full life and will be greatly missed; and

Whereas, together with his beloved wife, Sandra "Sandy" Mayhew Harris, he reared two fine children, Elizabeth "Lisa" Harris Schunter (Paul) of Surrey, England, and Michelle Harris Dennis (Patrick) of Columbia. His children blessed him with the affection of three loving grandchildren: Abigail Elizabeth Schunter, Andrew Harris Schunter, and Anna Margaret Dennis; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives are grateful for the life and legacy of Dr. Anthony "Tony" E. Harris and for the example of service and dedication he set for all who knew him. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, express their profound sorrow upon the passing of Dr. Anthony "Tony" E. Harris of Aiken County and extend their deepest sympathy to his large and loving family and his many friends.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Dr. Anthony "Tony" E. Harris.
