Our thought for the day is from Psalm 113: "Give praise you servants of the Lord."
God and Father of us all, as we assemble for another day, we give thanks for allowing these women and men to serve. Give them wisdom and courage and a spirit of cooperation to fulfill the duties they have been elected to perform. Give them Your blessings to do the right thing for the right reason. Keep our minds open to new opportunities of service to this State. Hear our prayer, O God. Amen.

Young: A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION TO DESIGNATE APRIL AS PSYCHOLOGICALLY HEALTHY WORKPLACE MONTH IN SOUTH CAROLINA AND TO URGE BUSINESSES TO PROMOTE PSYCHOLOGICALLY HEALTHY WORKPLACES FOR THE BENEFIT OF THE EMPLOYEES AND THE COMPANIES.

Whereas, it is important for businesses to provide psychologically healthy workplaces that are sensitive to their employees' mental well-being; and

Whereas, the South Carolina Psychological Association will present its first Psychologically Healthy Workplace Award in April 2002 at its Spring Conference, to the business that best fosters a mentally healthy work environment; and

Whereas, the award will be presented to the business that does the best job encouraging employee involvement, family support, employee growth and development, and employee health and safety; and

Whereas, in addressing these four areas involved in establishing a psychologically healthy workplace, businesses could encourage employees to participate in problem-solving and decision-making, allow flexible work schedules, and provide child and elder care assistance, provide employees with opportunities to pursue additional training, and provide quality health and mental health benefits; and

Whereas, a psychologically healthy workplace results in increased productivity and employee retention rates, recruiting advantages,

company image enhancement, a better workplace atmosphere, and workers who are less stressed and more satisfied with their jobs; and

Whereas, failure to implement healthy workplace initiatives can impact a business. A survey conducted in 2000 by the American Psychological Association revealed that one in four employees has taken a "mental health" sick day, and according to the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, health care expenses are almost fifty percent greater for employees who report high levels of stress; and

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly support promoting healthy work environments for the benefit of the companies as well as the employees and support the establishment of April as Psychologically Healthy Workplace Month in South Carolina. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, designate April as Psychologically Healthy Workplace Month in South Carolina and urge businesses to promote psychologically healthy workplaces for the benefit of the employees and the companies.
