FOUR DECADES OF OUTSTANDING SERVICE AND LEADERSHIP AS A DISTINGUISHED
EDUCATOR, SCHOLAR AND ADMINISTRATOR AT THE UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA, UPON
THE OCCASION OF HIS RETIREMENT.

RESOLUTION
TO CONGRATULATE AND RECOGNIZE DR. JOHN J. DUFFY
FOR FOUR DECADES OF OUTSTANDING SERVICE AND
LEADERSHIP AS A DISTINGUISHED EDUCATOR, SCHOLAR
AND ADMINISTRATOR AT THE UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH
CAROLINA, UPON THE OCCASION OF HIS RETIREMENT.
Whereas, the members of the General Assembly have learned with
deep regret that Dr. John J. Duffy will retire July 1, 1998, after four
decades of loyal service to the University of South Carolina; and
Whereas, Dr. Duffy is a native of Charleston, South Carolina, and a
1952 graduate of the College of Charleston; and
Whereas, Dr. Duffy also earned an M.A. degree and a Ph. D., both in
history, from the University of South Carolina; and
Whereas, Dr. Duffy married the former Marcia Tinkham and they
have three children, John Joseph, Eleanor Fletcher (Mrs. M.D.
Thompson, Jr.), and Katharine Mary (Mrs. Robert J. Thomas, Jr.);
and three grandchildren, Robert, Joseph, and Mark; and
Whereas, Dr. Duffy began his career as an administrative leader at
the University of South Carolina in August of 1959, upon his
appointment as the first Resident Director of the Beaufort Regional
Campus and served in that capacity until 1966; and
Whereas, Dr. Duffy's love for his work and his continuous and
unwavering devotion to the University of South Carolina allowed
him to continually move into highly respected administrative
positions within the University of South Carolina system; and
Whereas, Dr. Duffy was named System Vice President for University
Campuses and Continuing Education in 1977 and held that post until
1988 when he was named Chancellor for University Campuses and
Continuing Education, a position he held for four years; and
Whereas, Dr. Duffy was named Vice Provost and Executive Dean for
Regional Campuses and Continuing Education in 1992, and in 1994
was named Interim Dean for Applied Professional Sciences,
positions which he still holds today; and
Whereas, Dr. Duffy has compiled an exemplary record of service in
the field of higher education that has paved the way for new ideas
and standards during the next century for the University of South
Carolina and this State;
Whereas, Dr. Duffy has committed his life and career to ensuring that
higher educational opportunities exist for non-traditional college
students in all areas of the State; and
Whereas, Dr. Duffy has received numerous awards and recognition
including: the Garnet and Black Award for outstanding contribution
to the University campus in 1969-70, named Beaufort's Young Man
of the Year in 1965, named Guigard Lecturer in 1973, the South
Carolina Association for Continuing Higher Education's Continuing
Educator of the Year in 1983, the University of South Carolina's
Educational Foundation Distinguished Service Award recipient for
1989, Black Faculty and Staff Association Affirmative Action Award
recipient for 1993-94 and the Administrative Employees Club
Employee of the Year Award recipient in 1993-94; and
Whereas, Dr. Duffy is a member and past president of Phi Beta
Kappa, the Southern Historical Association, South Carolina
Historical Association, Caroliniana Society, a sustaining member of
the South Carolina Democratic Party, past president of Beaufort
Rotary, a member and one of the founders of the National
Organization of Regional Campus Administrators, a member of the
South Carolina Association for Continuing Higher Education and the
Clariosophic Society; and
Whereas, Dr. Duffy is the author of numerous publications which
include, "The Secession Convention", "Charleston
at the Turn of the Century", St. Andrews Quarterly, A Short
History of Beaufort County, "Charleston" in The
Encyclopedia of Southern History and An Oral History With Mr. Ted
Riley, Lawyer, Politician and Civic Leader; and
Whereas, Dr. Duffy is a highly respected and greatly admired
educator, scholar, administrator and public servant who will be sorely
missed by the University of South Carolina and the citizens of this
great State. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives
concurring:
That the members of the General Assembly, by this resolution,
publicly congratulate and recognize Dr. John J. Duffy for his
distinguished career as an educator, scholar and administrator at the
University of South Carolina, upon the occasion of his retirement,
and wish him well in his future endeavors.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to
Dr. John J. Duffy.
