S. 930

A SENATE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND REMEMBER THE GROUP OF SENATORS AFFECTIONATELY KNOWN AS "DRUMMOND'S RENEGADES" WHO DURING THE 1980'S GAINED MUCH RECOGNITION AS A COUNTERWEIGHT TO THE ESTABLISHED SENATE LEADERSHIP AT THAT TIME.

Whereas, during the 1980's a group of senators banded together to establish a counter force against the established senate leadership in regard to certain critical issues facing the Senate of that day; and

Whereas, these senators became affectionately known as "Drummond's Renegades" after their defacto leader, the Honorable John Drummond of Greenwood; and

Whereas, Drummond's Renegades wanted to bring sound fiscal discipline to the State of South Carolina with regard to use of both federal and state money and to establish a "rainy day" savings account which could be utilized in times of austerity; and

Whereas, these principles ultimately coalesced into a number of provisions of law now in place including the state general reserve fund; and

Whereas, some of these persons still serving in the Senate today include:

The Honorable John Drummond of Greenwood;

The Honorable John E. Courson of Richland;

The Honorable Hugh K. Leatherman of Florence;

The Honorable Phil P. Leventis of Sumter;

The Honorable Glenn F. McConnell of Charleston;

The Honorable Harvey S. Peeler of Cherokee;

The Honorable Nikki G. Setzler of Lexington;

The Honorable David L. Thomas of Greenville; and

Whereas, it is appropriate and fitting that the Senate remember these renegades of many years ago who have contributed so much to the Senate and the State of South Carolina. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the Senate recognize and remember the group of Senators affectionately known as "Drummond's Renegades" who during the 1980's gained much recognition as a counterweight to the established Senate leadership at that time.
