A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO REQUEST THAT THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION NAME THE INTERCHANGE LOCATED AT THE INTERSECTION OF UNITED STATES HIGHWAY 17 BYPASS AND SOUTH CAROLINA HIGHWAY 544 IN HORRY COUNTY THE "NELSON JACKSON MEMORIAL INTERCHANGE" AND ERECT APPROPRIATE MARKERS OR SIGNS AT THIS INTERCHANGE THAT CONTAIN THE WORDS "NELSON JACKSON MEMORIAL INTERCHANGE".

Whereas, Mr. Nelson Jackson was born in Tryon, North Carolina on February 26, 1920 and died on February 1, 2010. He was the son of the late John Nelson and Laura Chapman Jackson; and

Whereas, he was a 1942 graduate of Clemson College and served his country with honor and distinction as a first lieutenant in the United States Army during World War II; and

Whereas, in 1970, he moved to Myrtle Beach with his wife Mary Emily Platt Jackson to develop the Ocean Lakes Family Campground; and

Whereas, Ocean Lakes opened on July 2, 1971 with thirty campsites and one boathouse. In 2010 it has expanded to eight hundred ninety-three campsites and two thousand five hundred fifty-four annual leases. Ocean Lakes received the National "RV Park of the Year" award in 1997, 1999, 2002, 2003, 2008, and 2009; and

Whereas, Mr. Jackson served as a past member of the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce Board, the Conway Hospital Board, Nations Bank Board, and was heavily involved in the development of the Jackson Family Center for Ethics and Values at Coastal Carolina University; and

Whereas, it would be fitting and proper to forever recognize the many contributions that Mr. Jackson made to our state and nation during his lifetime by naming an interchange in Horry County in his honor. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly request that the Department of Transportation name the interchange located at the intersection of United States Highway 17 Bypass and South Carolina Highway 544 in Horry County the "Nelson Jackson Memorial Interchange" and erect appropriate markers or signs at this interchange that contain the words "Nelson Jackson Memorial Interchange".

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Department of Transportation.
