A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE ALVIN BROWN, A NATIVE OF ST. HELENA ISLAND, ON BEING ELECTED THE FIRST AFRICAN-AMERICAN MAYOR OF JACKSONVILLE, FLORIDA, AND TO WISH HIM ALL THE BEST AS HE TAKES UP HIS NEW DUTIES.

Whereas, on July 1, 2011, Alvin Brown will take office as the first African-American mayor of Jacksonville, Florida. Elected on May 17, 2011, he will succeed Mayor John Peyton; and

Whereas, Mr. Brown was born on St. Helena Island. Moving to Jacksonville in 1981, he attended Edward Waters College and Jacksonville University, where he earned his bachelor's degree and a master's in business administration; and

Whereas, during the 1990s, he served as an adviser to Housing and Urban Development director Andrew Cuomo, President Bill Clinton, and Vice President Al Gore; and

Whereas, it is fitting that the House of Representatives should pause in its deliberations to congratulate this son of South Carolina on this historic victory, his election as the first African-American mayor of Jacksonville, Florida, and wish him well in this new endeavor. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, congratulate Alvin Brown, a native of St. Helena Island, on being elected the first African-American mayor of Jacksonville, Florida, and wish him all the best as he takes up his new duties.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Alvin Brown.
