A Concurrent Resolution to extend the sympathy of the members of the General
Assembly to the friends and family of William Youman Edens, Jr., of Richland
County, who died Saturday, November 27, 1993.

01/12/94 House Introduced, adopted, sent to Senate HJ-20
01/13/94 Senate Introduced, adopted, returned with concurrence SJ-13

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO EXTEND THE SYMPATHY OF THE MEMBERS OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY TO THE FRIENDS AND FAMILY OF WILLIAM YOUMAN EDENS, JR., OF RICHLAND COUNTY, WHO DIED SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 27, 1993.

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly were saddened to learn of the death of William Youman Edens, Jr., Executive Director of Palmetto AIDS Life Support Services (PALSS); and

Whereas, Bill Edens' name was synonymous with PALSS, created in 1985 to give practical and emotional support to people with AIDS or the virus that causes it; and

Whereas, Edens fought AIDS with a rare blend of wit and compassion, patience and anger; and

Whereas, Mr. Edens traveled the State on a moped to raise funds for the organization during its fledgling years and to counsel frightened people who had tested positive for HIV; and

Whereas, he became a nationally respected authority on HIV and AIDS and was the nation's first recipient of The Mark Drum Award for Advocacy for people with AIDS; and

Whereas, he taught at Coastal Carolina and at the School of Health at the University of South Carolina; and

Whereas, Bill Edens had a vision of what AIDS was going to mean to the State medically, economically, socially, in human terms, long before anyone else seemed to realize what a serious problem it was going to be; and

Whereas, Mr. Edens' favorite saying was on a 1988 desk calendar on his desk turned to an Arabic proverb which may best personify his efforts which stated: "On the day of victory, no one is tired." Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly extend their sympathy to the friends and family of William Youman Edens, Jr., of Richland County, who died Saturday, November 27, 1993.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to his family.
