A CONCURRENT
RESOLUTION
TO EXPRESS THE SYMPATHY TO THE FAMILY OF JAMES
GARY BATSON OF TRAVELERS REST UPON HIS DEATH.
Whereas, James Gary Batson was a 1970 graduate of Travelers Rest
High School where he was an all-state football player, a participant in
the North-South All-Star games, and co-captain for the Devildogs; and
Whereas, Gary, as he was known, graduated from Carson-Newman
College in Johnson City, Tennessee where he also played football; and
Whereas, he owned and operated Gary Batson Feed Store Restaurant
and State Park Grocery; and
Whereas, one of his favorite things to do was to cook barbecue and he
catered events around town with his Little Texas Barbecue; and
Whereas, his other love was racing cars and he was a weekly competitor
at the half-mile Greenville-Pickens Speedway for several seasons; and
Whereas, he was close to realizing his dream of moving away from the
short track to NASCAR'S bigger events; and
Whereas, Mr. Batson was racing in the Sportsman Division at Charlotte
Motor Speedway when he was involved in an accident which caused
severe injuries; and
Whereas, he later died from those injuries leaving a void in the racing
community and in the lives of his friends; and
Whereas, Gary Batson, his barbecue, and his racing will be missed.
Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the members of the General Assembly express sympathy to the
family of James Gary Batson of Travelers Rest upon his death.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mr.
Batson's family.
