S. 419

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND COMMEND ORLANDO HUDSON, A NATIVE OF DARLINGTON COUNTY, FOR HIS OUTSTANDING PreviousSPORTSNext ACHIEVEMENTS IN THE FIELD OF BASEBALL.

Whereas, Orlando Hudson, a baseball star with the Arizona Diamondbacks, by dint of diligence, determination, and hard work has risen from the high school ranks to play ball in the major leagues; and

Whereas, he is a graduate of Darlington High School, where he played basketball, football (as quarterback), and baseball, in his senior year being named 1996 Baseball Player of the Year and a second-team All-American; and

Whereas, performing as an exceptional athlete at Darlington High School, he earned the praise of his teachers, and Darlington Head Varsity Basketball Coach David Neilson has said of him, "Orlando Hudson is one of the finest athletes I've ever had the privilege of coaching"; and

Whereas, after achieving first-team All-American status as a college baseball player, Orlando Hudson was graduated from Spartanburg Methodist College in 1998; and

Whereas, this baseball phenomenon subsequently was drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays and in 2005 captured his first Gold Glove Award, which is given annually to the major-league player judged to have turned in the "most superior individual fielding performance" at each position in each league, as voted by the managers and coaches in each league; and

Whereas, since being traded to the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2006, Mr. Hudson has continued his stellar career with that team, winning his second Gold Glove Award; and

Whereas, having a heart for more than just baseball, he lends his considerable talents and fame to worthy causes such as Darlington's annual Basketball Classic, the proceeds of which benefit autistic children. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, recognize and commend Orlando Hudson, a native of Darlington County, for his outstanding Previoussports achievements in the field of baseball.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Orlando Hudson.
