Charleston County for his dedicated and outstanding service as Director of the

Carolina Wildlife and Marine Resources Department, and extending him best
wishes for happiness upon his retirement.

A CONCURRENT
RESOLUTION
COMMENDING AND THANKING DR. VICTOR G. BURRELL, JR.,
OF CHARLESTON COUNTY FOR HIS DEDICATED AND
OUTSTANDING SERVICE AS DIRECTOR OF THE MARINE
RESOURCES RESEARCH INSTITUTE OF THE DIVISION OF
MARINE RESOURCES, SOUTH CAROLINA WILDLIFE AND
MARINE RESOURCES DEPARTMENT, AND EXTENDING HIM
BEST WISHES FOR HAPPINESS UPON HIS RETIREMENT.
Whereas, Dr. Victor G. Burrell, Jr., of Charleston County has served
since 1972 as director of the Marine Resources Research Institute of the
Division of Marine Resources (MRRI), South Carolina Wildlife and
Marine Resources Department; and
Whereas, Dr. Burrell has announced his retirement effective at the
beginning of April, 1991; and
Whereas, a native of Florence, he received a B.S. degree in English from
the College of Charleston in 1949 and later earned both a master's
degree and a Ph.D. degree in marine science from the College of
William and Mary; and
Whereas, in 1972, he resigned from his duties on the staff of the Virginia
Institute of Marine Science and returned to South Carolina as an
associate marine scientist with the recently established Division of
Marine Resources in Charleston; and
Whereas, during his career, Dr. Burrell has published more than sixty-five scientific papers in the areas of zooplankton ecology, shellfish
biology, and oyster culture; and
Whereas, during his tenure as director of the MRRI, Dr. Burrell has seen
the staff double to about fifty professional individuals, including fifteen
Ph.D. - level marine scientists; and
Whereas, he has served as president of the National Shellfish
Association and the Southeastern Estuarine Research Society (SEERS)
and recently was named an honorary life member of SEERS; and
Whereas, he has also served as president of the College of Charleston
Alumni Association and was honored as the college's alumnus of the
year; and
Whereas, he is listed in Community Leaders of America, Personalities
of the South, American Men and Women of Science, International
Directory of Distinguished Leadership, Who's Who in the South and
Southwest, and Men of Achievement; and
Whereas, he has had a very distinguished career and has served the State
of South Carolina with dedication; and
Whereas, he is an outstanding professional person and leader whose
accomplishments and contributions are highly deserving of recognition.
Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:
That the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this
resolution, commends and thanks Dr. Victor G. Burrell, Jr., of
Charleston County for his dedicated and outstanding service as director
of the Marine Resources Research Institute of the Division of Marine
Resources, South Carolina Wildlife and Marine Resources Department,
and extends him best wishes for happiness upon his retirement.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Dr.
Burrell at James Island and to Dr. James A. Timmerman, Jr., executive
director of the South Carolina Wildlife and Marine Resources
Department.
