H. 4014

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO HONOR MRS. ETHEL L. WESTON, OF RICHLAND COUNTY, ON THE OCCASION OF MOTHER'S DAY, AND TO PreviousWISHNext HER A JOYOUS CELEBRATION AND MANY MORE YEARS OF HEALTH AND HAPPINESS.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina General Assembly note with pleasure that Mother's Day will be celebrated on Sunday, May 13, 2007; and

Whereas, it is fitting that all the citizens of South Carolina should pause to remember their mothers and express gratitude for the care and love these dear ones continually give their children, and, on the occasion of Mother's Day 2007, the General Assembly PreviouswishesNext to honor Mrs. Ethel L. Weston as one of this great State's outstanding mothers, one worthy of praise and emulation by all women who would be a blessing to their children; and

Whereas, one of a fine family of seven girls and two boys, Ethel L. Weston, daughter of the late Willie Pickens Oliphant, Sr., and Ethel Culbreath Oliphant, was born in Edgefield in the first half of the twentieth century; and

Whereas, after the family's move to Columbia in 1949, she graduated from Booker T. Washington High School and attended Allen University, where she completed her education; and

Whereas, the young Ethel married Wilbert Walden Weston, Jr., and moved with her husband to Chicago in 1955, where the Lord blessed their union with two children, Michael Irvin Weston and Christie Michele Weston, as well as five grandchildren; and

Whereas, after joining Chicago's Sixth United Presbyterian Church in 1956, she became active there and was ordained as a deacon in 1983. She also served her community as a Girl Scout leader for more than fifteen years and taught piano lessons, an activity in which she continues to find much pleasure to this day; and

Whereas, retiring after thirty years' employment with Human Resources for the State of Illinois, Mrs. Weston left Chicago in 1998, her husband having passed away twenty years prior to that time, and returned to Columbia, where she now attends New Ebenezer Baptist Church and enjoys being near family; and

Whereas, those who know and love her testify that Ethel L. Weston is a mother deserving of the commendation found in Proverbs 31:28 (KJV): "Her children arise up, and call her blessed." Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, honor Mrs. Ethel L. Weston, of Richland County, on the occasion of Mother's Day, and Previouswish her a joyous celebration and many more years of health and happiness.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mrs. Ethel L. Weston.
