H. 5365

A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO HONOR AND CELEBRATE MRS. NAN JOHNSON ON THE OCCASION OF HER RETIREMENT FROM THE TOWN OF HILTON HEAD ISLAND AFTER A THIRTY-FOUR YEAR TENURE AND TO PreviousWISHNext HER MUCH HAPPINESS AND RELAXATION IN HER WELL-EARNED RETIREMENT.

Whereas, the members of the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina deem it fitting to pause in their deliberations to honor Mrs. Nan Johnson who retired from her thirty-four year post as the voice of the town of Hilton Head Island on May 1, 2018; and

Whereas, Mrs. Johnson retired as the town's longest-serving employee and the fourteenth person hired just months after the town was incorporated, following years of contentious debate. Her career has seen three town hall locations and nine mayors; and

Whereas, the youngest of eight children, Mrs. Johnson attended Georgia Southern Teachers College and taught school for a number of years. Following this, she spent a decade working with the American Red Cross, serving military families; and

Whereas, in April 1984, Mrs. Johnson was hired on the spot by an overworked town clerk being pulled in a dozen directions as a new town government lurched to life in the rented John Gettys Smith office building; and

Whereas, faithfully serving her callers, Mrs. Johnson sought to always get them to the right person regardless of whether they actually needed someone with the town or with the county government or a State agency. She wouldn't only get her callers to the right body for their questions, she would ensure she found the person who could help solve their issue; and

Whereas, Mrs. Johnson lives a quiet life in rural Jasper County, enjoying yard work and reading inspirational books. By retiring, not only does she allow herself more time for the things she loves, she also eliminates an eighty-mile round-trip commute which she has been driving daily for the past thirty-four years; and

Whereas, the members of the House of Representatives of the Palmetto State are grateful for the grace and amenable manner with which Mrs. Nan Johnson fielded each of her calls over the past three decades and PreviouswishNext her the greatest of joy in her retirement. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, honor and celebrate Mrs. Nan Johnson on the occasion of her retirement from the town of Hilton Head Island after a thirty-four year tenure and Previouswish her much happiness and relaxation in her well-earned retirement.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Mrs. Nan Johnson.
