CONGRATULATING ELIZABETH AIKEN SANTAGATI ON
RECEIVING THE "COMMUNITY LEADERSHIP AWARD"
FROM THE COMMUNITY MINISTERIAL ALLIANCE ON
JANUARY 17, 1998, AND COMMENDING HER FOR HER
YEARS OF LEADERSHIP, DEDICATION, AND HARD WORK
ON BEHALF OF HER COMMUNITY.
Whereas, Elizabeth Aiken Santagati, a native of Lady's Island, began
community service in high school where she was active in the civil
rights movement; and
Whereas, upon returning to Beaufort in 1974, she became affiliated
with many civic organizations such as VFW 9166, Disabled
American Veterans Chapter 12, American Legion Post 207, parent
teachers organizations, Lady's Island Citizens Advisory Board, and
the NAACP and was a member of the Board of Directors of Citizens
Opposed to Domestic Abuse; and
Whereas, Ms. Santagati was a participant in the struggle against
widening Highway 21 through the Eustis Community and a member
of the committee which sought revision of the family exemption
portion of the Beaufort County Comprehensive Plan; and
Whereas, in her capacity as Executive Director of the South Carolina
Coastal Community Development Corporation she oversees the
corporation's day-to-day operations with vigor and determination.
Its projects include renovation of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Park
and the Corner Feed and Seed building as well as construction of a
million-dollar-plus food processing center. These projects are
expected to have a positive impact upon residents who are normally
left out of the area's economic successes. In addition, she serves on
the credit union organizing committee and the Board of Directors of
the South Carolina Association of Community Development
Corporations; and
Whereas, dedicated to empowering residents of disadvantaged sea
islands and coastal communities educationally, economically,
socially, and politically, she is an advocate for building wealth
through self-help programs; and
Whereas, Ms. Santagati received the "Community Leadership
Award" from the Community Ministerial Alliance on January 17,
1998, an indication of the high esteem in which she is held and a
recognition of her leadership and dedication; and
Whereas, Elizabeth Aiken Santagati is an outstanding and dynamic
individual; she is widely respected, admired, and loved; and it is with
great pleasure that we find ourselves with the opportunity to accord
her special recognition and honor by this resolution. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives
concurring:
That the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this
resolution, congratulates Elizabeth Aiken Santagati on receiving the
"Community Leadership Award" from the Community Ministerial
Alliance on January 17, 1998, and commends her for her years of
leadership, dedication, and hard work on behalf of her community.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to
Ms. Santagati.
