A CONCURRENT
RESOLUTION
TO COMMEND W. C. HUNTER OF BELTON, SOUTH CAROLINA
FOR HIS DEDICATION TO PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES AND
IN CONCEIVING AND IMPLEMENTING THE "BUCK-A-CUP
MEANS BRACE-A-CHILD" SLOGAN.
Whereas, in 1954, W. C. Hunter, a Georgetown restauranteur and owner
of Gator's Drive-In had a dream on how he would increase the proceeds
of Coffee Day in his restaurant, a project started by the Restaurant
Association in 1952 to benefit the Crippled Childrens Society of South
Carolina; and
Whereas, the next morning after his dream, he ordered 600 buttons
imprinted with the letters B.A.C. on them; and
Whereas, when the buttons arrived, much to Mr. Hunter's surprise, he
sold all of them very quickly and soon his customers were turning the
buttons back in so they could be sold again; and
Whereas, Mr. Hunter raised over $800.00 in his small restaurant in l954
using only 600 buttons; and
Whereas, in l955, Mr. Hunter was President of the South Carolina
Restaurant Association and the "B.A.C." buttons were used
extensively in the State. That year, "Buck-A-Cup means
Brace-A-Child" became the slogan for "Coffee Day";
and
Whereas, the South Carolina Law Enforcement Officers Association
voted in l958 to co-sponsor this project with the Restaurant Association;
and Whereas, "B.A.C." has raised over $6 million to assist
children and adults with disabilities and Mr. Hunter has actively
participated with the project since its inception; and
Whereas, additionally, he is an Honorary Life Board Member of the
State Board of Directors of Life Abilities, serves on the Board of Life
Abilities of Anderson County, and works with Meals on Wheels in his
hometown of Belton; and
Whereas, for the last three years alone, $l,7l8,886 has been raised in the
"B.A.C." project and "B.A.C." is the largest,
oldest project of its kind to benefit a non-profit agency in the country.
Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:
That the members of the General Assembly commend W. C. Hunter of
Belton for his dedication to persons with disabilities and in conceiving
and implementing the "Buck-A-Cup means Brace-A-Child"
slogan.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mr.
W. C. Hunter.
