MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA STATE SENATE TO COACH FINIS HORNE, LANDER
UNIVERSITY ATHLETICS DIRECTOR AND MEN'S HEAD BASKETBALL COACH, ON THE OCCASION
OF HIS RETIREMENT AND WISHING HIM SUCCESS AND HAPPINESS IN ALL HIS FUTURE
ENDEAVORS.

A SENATE RESOLUTION
TO EXTEND SINCERE CONGRATULATIONS AND BEST
WISHES OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA
STATE SENATE TO COACH FINIS HORNE, LANDER
UNIVERSITY ATHLETICS DIRECTOR AND MEN'S HEAD
BASKETBALL COACH, ON THE OCCASION OF HIS
RETIREMENT AND WISHING HIM SUCCESS AND
HAPPINESS IN ALL HIS FUTURE ENDEAVORS.
Whereas, the members of the Senate have learned that Coach Finis
Horne will be retiring later this year after twenty-nine years of
dedicated service to Lander University as athletics director and men's
head basketball coach; and
Whereas, Coach Horne earned an associate of arts degree from Bethel
(Ky.) College in 1963, a bachelor's degree in physical education from
Campbellsville (Ky.) College in 1966 and a master's degree in
physical education from Western Kentucky University in 1968 and
immediately was hired by Lander to establish a varsity program; and
Whereas, he was appointed as the school's first athletics director in
1971, under his direction the Lander University intercollegiate
athletics program has grown to eight men's and women's athletic
teams with three more to be added in 1998; and
Whereas, Coach Horne's "Senators" have proudly produced many
wins playing basketball in the Finis Horne Arena; and
Whereas, Coach Horne is the winningest active collegiate coach in
the state of South Carolina with 491 wins; and
Whereas, he was voted the NAIA District 6 Coach of the Year in
1972-73, 1978-79, 1979-80, 1987-88, 1989-90 and the NAIA Area
7 Coach of the Year in 1980;
Whereas, most recently he was the Peach Belt Athletic Conference
Coach of the Year in 1993-94 and 1994-1995 and his teams earned
automatic berths into the NCAA Division II National Tournament;
and
Whereas, Coach Horne has not only produced numerous winning
programs but also many athletes who are responsible and dedicated
citizens in their respective communities; and
Whereas, Coach Horne's vision for the Lander College athletic
program in 1968 has been realized today by the expansion and
competitiveness of all sports as well as by the establishment of the
John W. Drummond Complex, continuing the program's standard of
excellence in academics and athletics; and
Whereas, he has gained the respect of his players, fellow coaches, the
Lander University staff and people throughout the state because of
his character, integrity and willingness to make a difference in the
lives of young people; and
Whereas, the members of the Senate, by this resolution, on the
occasion of his retirement would like to publicly recognize and thank
him for the contributions he has made to Lander University and the
citizens of this state. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate:
That the members of the Senate hereby extend sincere
congratulations to Coach Finis Horne for a distinguished twenty-nine
year career as Lander University athletics director and men's head
basketball coach.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to
Lander University Coach and Athletics Director Finis Horne.
