A CONCURRENT
RESOLUTION
EXPRESSING THE SORROW OF THE MEMBERS OF THE
GENERAL ASSEMBLY AT THE DEATH OF DANNY EUGENE
ATKINS OF BLACKVILLE, SUPERINTENDENT OF
BARNWELL SCHOOL DISTRICT #19, AND EXTENDING
DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS.
Whereas, Mr. Danny Eugene Atkins of Blackville died suddenly on
December 22, 1997; and
Whereas, Mr. Atkins devoted his professional career to public
education in South Carolina; he served as teacher, coach, elementary
school principal, and high school principal for the Blackville-Hilda
Public Schools, and as Superintendent of Barnwell School District
#19, over a period spanning twenty-eight years of his life; and
Whereas, he served as a committee member for the South Carolina
High School League from 1988 to 1992, served as League Vice
President from 1995 to 1996, as League President from July, 1996 to
June, 1997, and as League Past President from July, 1997 until his
death; and
Whereas, he also served as President of the Barnwell County United
Way and as Chairman of the Crystal Jenkins Fund and was a member
of the Barnwell County Chamber of Commerce; and
Whereas, he was the husband of Joan G. Atkins and the father of
Kevin D. Atkins, who serves as a page for the Legislative Council of
the General Assembly; he also was the son of Clifford L. and Blanche
Cale Atkins; and
Whereas, Danny Atkins was greatly respected, admired, and loved
throughout the community; the Town of Blackville and the County
of Barnwell are truly better places because of the generous
contributions of his time, talents, energy, and resources; he was
devoted to excellence in public education in the great State of South
Carolina, and he left his mark through everything he did and
accomplished; while his sudden death stunned and deeply saddened
the entire community, it is nevertheless felt that everyone in
Blackville and Barnwell County has much to be thankful for in the
person of Danny Atkins and his giving, caring, and service-oriented
life. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives
concurring:
That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South
Carolina, by this resolution, express sorrow at the death of Danny
