A CONCURRENT
RESOLUTION
TO EXPRESS SYMPATHY TO THE FAMILY OF BELTON
OSWALD "TOMMY" THOMASON, JR., OF
GREENVILLE UPON HIS DEATH.
Whereas, Belton Oswald "Tommy" Thomason, Jr., of
Greenville died on May 11, 1993, at the age of 67; and
Whereas, Mr. Thomason was a partner in the law firm of Love,
Thornton, Arnold and Thomason for more than forty years; and
Whereas, he was born in Greenville and attended The Citadel before
being drafted into the Army in 1944 to serve in WWII; and
Whereas, he graduated from Furman University in 1949 and earned his
law degree from the University of Virginia Law School in 1952; and
Whereas, he began his law practice in 1952, served in the South
Carolina House of Representatives from 1959-62, and was a member of
the South Carolina Bar and the American Bar Association;
Whereas, Mr. Thomason was a fellow of the American College of Trial
Lawyers, served as solicitor and chief prosecuting attorney from
1963-1971, was a chairman of the South Carolina Public Service
Commission"s merit selection panel, and was a special circuit
judge for criminal court; and
Whereas, the Greenville Bar Association, of which in 1984 Mr.
Thomason was president, established an award in his name for
leadership and professionalism in the law community; and
Whereas, Mr. Thomason received numerous awards and honors,
including the Order of the Palmetto from Governor Carroll Campbell
and former Governor Dick Riley, and he was to receive an honorary
doctorate degree at Furman University"s 1993 commencement
exercises; and
Whereas, he was very active in his community and he will be missed by
members of the legal community, his friends, and family. Now,
therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:
That the members of the General Assembly express their deepest
sympathy to the family of Belton Oswald "Tommy"
Thomason, Jr., of Greenville upon his death.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mrs.
Jean Folk Thomason.
