H. 4240

A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR STEVE WOODWARD OF CHEROKEE COUNTY FOR HIS PreviousCOURAGENext IN RESCUING SEVEN GAFFNEY RESIDENTS FROM A FIRE.

Whereas, seven Gaffney people owe their lives to some very good timing and to the man who showed the PreviouscourageNext to save them, Mr. Steve Woodward of Cherokee County; and

Whereas, Mr. Woodward and his wife, Terri, had stayed up late on the night of April 29, 2007, and he had answered the call of the family dog to go outside at 1 a.m. Noticing a fire in the neighboring home, Mr. Woodward began yelling and throwing bricks at the home to wake the residents inside, after which he entered the burning building to get them out of one of the apartments, thus successfully saving them from harm; and

Whereas, in recognition of his heroic actions, local Red Cross chairman Ray Nix presented Mr. Woodward, who was accompanied by his family at the ceremony, with the Hero Award, marking the first time that award had been given in Cherokee County. On the occasion, Mr. Woodward noted, "We really do have to be our brothers' and sisters' keepers. As I get older, I realize life is so precious and so short. It was a miracle we were up and let the dog out and heard the fire"; and

Whereas, the Gaffney Fire Department attributed the happy ending to Steve Woodward's quick, decisive action and affirmed that without his intervention the outcome of the fire could have been very different; and

Whereas, the House of Representatives takes great pleasure in saluting Mr. Steve Woodward for his selfless, PreviouscourageousNext actions on the night of April 29, 2007, and wishes to express the gratitude of the citizens of Gaffney, as well as of the entire Palmetto State, to this heroic son of South Carolina. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize and honor Steve Woodward of Cherokee County for his Previouscourage in rescuing seven Gaffney residents from a fire.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mr. Steve Woodward.
