A CONCURRENT
RESOLUTION
COMMENDING GREENVILLE COUNTY FIREFIGHTERS DARYL
PERRY, XAVIER WALKER, AND PETE SHAW FOR THEIR
EXEMPLARY COURAGE AND DETERMINATION IN RESCUING
AN EIGHT-YEAR-OLD BOY FROM AN ABANDONED WELL.
Whereas, Michael Garigin, an eight-year-old Greenville boy, fell thirty
feet into an abandoned earthen well during the Christmas holidays and
feared for his life before help arrived; and
Whereas, Daryl Perry, a firefighter who works with the Wade Hampton
Fire District in Greenville County, was lowered into the well wearing a
rope harness to get young Michael while firefighters Xavier Walker and
Pete Shaw held the rope; and
Whereas, when firefighter Perry took the boy in his arms, the rescuers
at the top of the well pulled the two of them up to safety, accomplishing
the rescue in only about ten minutes; and
Whereas, Mr. Perry's unmatched bravery and the outstanding effort and
dedication of Messrs. Walker and Shaw combined to avert what could
have become a genuine tragedy; and
Whereas, the action of these excellent firefighters in a crisis situation is
highly deserving of recognition. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:
That the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this
resolution, commends Greenville County firefighters Daryl Perry,
Xavier Walker, and Pete Shaw for their exemplary courage and
determination in rescuing an eight-year-old boy from an abandoned well.
Be it further resolved that copies of this resolution be forwarded to
Messrs. Perry, Walker, and Shaw.
