S*1218 Resolution, By Wilson, Courson, Giese, Hayes, Holland, Lander and
Patterson
A Senate Resolution expressing the sympathy of the members of the Senate to
the family and friends of Donald L. Truesdell of Lugoff, a recipient of the
 Congressional Medal of Honor.

02/24/94 Senate Introduced and adopted SJ-4

A SENATE RESOLUTION

EXPRESSING THE SYMPATHY OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SENATE TO THE FAMILY AND FRIENDS OF DONALD L. TRUESDELL OF LUGOFF, A RECIPIENT OF THE CONGRESSIONAL MEDAL OF HONOR.

Whereas, the members of the Senate were saddened to note the death on September 21, 1993, of Mr. Donald L. Truesdell of Lugoff; and

Whereas, Mr. Truesdell was one of that extraordinary group of American servicemen who were recipients of the Congressional Medal of Honor; and

Whereas, Mr. Truesdell was born in 1906 in Lugoff and served in the United States Marines and while second in command a Guardia Nacional Patrol near Constancia, Nicaragua, in April 1932, saved the lives of the members of the patrol when he took the full impact of a grenade explosion; and

Whereas, this extraordinary act of courageNext cost Marine Corporal Donald L. Truesdell his hand and resulted in other injuries to him, an act so selfless and in such disregard of personal safety that he was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor on April 24, 1932; and

Whereas, Mr. Truesdell had a distinguished career in the Marine Corps, entering at the age of eighteen and serving for twenty-two years, his last service being with the Nicaraguan Expedition Force in 1927 until the time of his wounding in 1932; and

Whereas, his group service was also recognized when he received the Nicaraguan Campaign Medal of Valor and the second Nicaraguan Campaign Medal; and

Whereas, it is appropriate for the members of the Senate to pause in their deliberations that they might note the passing of so distinguished a son of South Carolina whose act of Previouscourage in saving the lives of his fellow servicemen set an example to all his fellow Americans. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the Senate express sympathy to the family and friends of Donald L. Truesdell of Lugoff, a recipient of the Congressional Medal of Honor.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to his widow, Mrs. Gladys Truesdell, 1084 Ridgeway Road, Lugoff, South Carolina 19078.
