A Concurrent Resolution to express the deepest sympathy and sorrow of the

and many friends of Eastover's Mayor, the Honorable Lewis N. Scott of Richland
County, who passed away on Sunday May 14, 1995.

A CONCURRENT
RESOLUTION
TO EXPRESS THE DEEPEST SYMPATHY AND SORROW OF
THE MEMBERS OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE
STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA TO THE FAMILY AND MANY
FRIENDS OF EASTOVER'S MAYOR, THE HONORABLE
LEWIS N. SCOTT OF RICHLAND COUNTY, WHO PASSED
AWAY ON SUNDAY, MAY 14, 1995.
Whereas, the members of the General Assembly were deeply
saddened to learn of the death on Sunday, May 14, 1995, of The
Honorable Lewis N. Scott of Richland County, who had been
serving as the Mayor of the Town of Eastover for the past
twenty-three years; and
Whereas, after taking office in 1972 as the first African-American
elected Mayor in a Richland County municipality, Mayor Scott was
involved in nearly every town activity; and
Whereas, he labored tirelessly in numerous areas for the betterment
of the Town of Eastover and always had the town's best interests at
heart; and;
Whereas, through much of his time as Mayor, he worked for the
Richland County Public Works Department, leaving in late 1991
because of health problems and since then, he worked only for
Eastover; and
Whereas, during much of his tenure, he moved the rural town
slowly forward; he oversaw the installation of a sewer system; he
helped keep the town bus system running; and he was instrumental
in starting the annual Eastover Parade and Festival, which draws the
entire town for a celebration; and
Whereas, Lewis Scott's years as Mayor weren't always easy, money
was short, and he often had to juggle dwindling resources in a town
that seemed to need so much; and
Whereas, Mayor Scott was fifty-six years young, and ran for a sixth
term in 1992, even as his name was added to a list of those eligible
for a heart transplant; and
Whereas, he was a devoted public servant who gave his time,
talents, and energy without hesitation for the betterment of the
Town of Eastover, Richland County, and the entire State of South
Carolina;
Whereas, he was an outstanding individual who will long be
remembered and greatly missed by all who knew him; and
Whereas, we, the members of the General Assembly recognize the
courage and fighting spirit displayed for twenty-three years by
Mayor Lewis Scott. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate
concurring:
That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South
Carolina, by this resolution, express sorrow upon the death of the
Honorable Lewis N. Scott and want his family and many friends to
know that they are uppermost in our thoughts.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to
the family of The Honorable Lewis N. Scott.
