COUNTY FOR FORTY-NINE YEARS AS PASTOR OF SAINT JOHN BAPTIST CHURCH AND FOR HIS
OUTSTANDING SERVICE AND SPIRITUAL AND CIVIC LEADERSHIP TO COLUMBIA AND THE
STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA.

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
COMMENDING REVEREND ROSCOE C. WILSON, SR. OF
RICHLAND COUNTY FOR FORTY-NINE YEARS AS PASTOR
OF SAINT JOHN BAPTIST CHURCH AND FOR HIS
OUTSTANDING SERVICE AND SPIRITUAL AND CIVIC
LEADERSHIP TO COLUMBIA AND THE STATE OF SOUTH
CAROLINA.
Whereas, Reverend Roscoe C. Wilson, Sr. was born in Seguine,
Texas, where he attended elementary school and graduated with
honors from Anderson High School in Austin, Texas; and
Whereas, upon graduation he was drafted into the army where he
served for four years and received an honorable discharge; and
Whereas, he continued his education at Texas Southern University
for one year; and
Whereas, in 1946 Reverend Wilson entered Benedict College where
he earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree and in 1952 a Bachelor of
Divinity Degree from the J. J. Starks School of Theology at Benedict
College; and
Whereas, in March, 1948, he was called to the pastorate of Saint John
Baptist Church at Beltline Boulevard and Farrow Road in Columbia;
and
Whereas, through his leadership, the church was rebuilt in 1952,
renovated in 1970, and a new church was built in 1996 with the
former church building being renovated as a family life center in
1997; and
Whereas, during his more than forty-nine years as pastor of Saint
John Baptist Church, he has been an exemplary spiritual leader and
has demonstrated courage, fortitude, and steadfast integrity in taking
stands for rights in Columbia, throughout South Carolina and the
nation. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate
concurring:
That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South
Carolina, by this resolution, commend The Reverend Roscoe C.
Wilson, Sr. of Richland County for forty-nine years as pastor of St.
John Saint Baptist Church and for his outstanding service and
spiritual and civic leadership to Columbia and the State of South
Carolina.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to
Reverend Roscoe C. Wilson, Sr. on July 19, 1997.
