A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO EXPRESS THE PROFOUND SORROW OF ALL SOUTH CAROLINIANS UPON THE DEATH OF CHERONE LOUIS GUNN OF NORFOLK, VIRGINIA, A TWENTY-TWO YEAR OLD SIGNALMAN SEAMAN TRAGICALLY KILLED IN THE TERRORIST ATTACK ON THE DESTROYER, USS COLE (DDG 67), AND EXPRESS THEIR DEEP AND SINCERE APPRECIATION FOR HIS PreviousCOURAGENext AND HIS EXTRAORDINARY SERVICE TO THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina General Assembly were shocked and saddened to learn of the attack on October 12, 2000, which took the life of Cherone Louis Gunn and sixteen other sailors; and

Whereas, Cherone Louis Gunn was a 1997 graduate of Kempsville High School in Virginia Beach, Virginia, where he played junior varsity and varsity football; and

Whereas, Cherone Louis Gunn enlisted in the United States Navy in January 2000, and was assigned to the USS Cole in May 2000. Following in his father's footsteps, his first ambition was to serve his country; and

Whereas, he hoped that his military experience would help him achieve his career goal of becoming a law enforcement officer; and

Whereas, although Cherone Louis Gunn's family and many friends miss his wonderful smile and charming ways, they also rejoice in the Lord with gladness and praise for having known and loved him; and

Whereas, Cherone Louis Gunn leaves precious memories to cherish for his parents, Louge and Mona Gunn; three brothers, Anton Gunn and his wife Tiffany of Columbia, South Carolina, Jamal Gunn and Jason Gunn of Virginia Beach, Virginia; paternal grandparents, Louis and Evelyn Gunn of Portsmouth, Virginia; maternal grandmother, Dorothy P. Taylor, of Norfolk, Virginia; godparents, Jacob and Bernice Cheeks of Chesapeake, Virginia; his fiancée, Lora Liddell, of Atlanta, Georgia; a special aunt, uncle, and cousin, El'Dawn, Stephanie, and Christian Taylor of Rex, Georgia; a host of other aunts and uncles: Clarence and Joan, Elge and Diane, Jerry and Linda, Elvin, Jr., and Veronica, Nancy and Carl, Caulbert and Venise, Warren and Jaye, Elvira and Michael, Lewis, Stephen, Elva, Trudy, great-aunt and uncle, Ray and Margie, cousins, other family, and friends; and

Whereas, Cherone Louis Gunn was a man of great integrity, PreviouscourageNext, and compassion who was loved by all who knew him; and his sudden and premature death leaves a void which will not soon be filled; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina General Assembly by this resolution, would like to extend heartfelt condolences to his parents, siblings, and other family members, and to his many friends. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, on behalf of all South Carolinians, express their profound sorrow upon the death of Cherone Louis Gunn of Norfolk, Virginia, a twenty-two year old seaman tragically killed in the terrorist attack on the destroyer, USS Cole (DDG 67), and express their deep and sincere appreciation for his Previouscourage and his extraordinary service to the United States of America.
