A CONCURRENT
RESOLUTION
CONGRATULATING BRIAN A. COMER OF ANDERSON ON
WINNING THE 1995 ALGERNON SYDNEY SULLIVAN
AWARD AT THE UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA.
Whereas, Brian A. Comer of Anderson has won the 1995 Algernon
Sydney Sullivan Award at the University of South Carolina in
Columbia; and
Whereas, the stated purpose of the Algernon Sydney Sullivan
Award is "to establish a permanent reminder of the noblest
human qualities as expressed and followed in the life of Algernon
Sydney Sullivan and to do so in a manner which will perpetuate the
influence of such a man, not so much as an individual, but as a
type"; and
Whereas, to recognize like qualities in others and to encourage in
youth the development of such characteristics, the Algernon Sydney
Sullivan Foundation, established by the noted humanitarian and
philanthropist, has chosen the field of education and selected certain
institutions through which this recognition and encouragement may
be given by annual awards; and
Whereas, at the University of South Carolina, the Algernon Sydney
Sullivan Award is bestowed upon two outstanding seniors, one male
and one female, as well as a distinguished alumnus or alumna, who
are considered to best exemplify the qualities for which the award
stands; and
Whereas, Brian A. Comer is the male student recipient of this
prestigious award at USC for 1995; and
Whereas, Brian is an outstanding young man in every way; he has
served as Student Government President and has represented the
USC students on the University's Board of Trustees; he is a
Carolina Scholar and has been elected to Phi Beta Kappa, Omicron
Delta Kappa, and Mortar Board; in 1994 he was the University's
nominee for one of the nation's highest undergraduate academic and
service awards, the Truman Scholarship; and he has also been a
mentor in the University's and the State's juvenile justice programs;
and
Whereas, Brian has also devotedly served the members of the
House of Representatives as a legislative aide for the House
Judiciary Committee; he has been an excellent aide and the
members and staff of the committee have come to admire him for
his intelligence and superb service and have also valued his
friendship; and
Whereas, Brian is people-oriented and is always ready to provide
service and assistance to his fellow human beings whenever and
wherever possible; and
Whereas, he has truly been a credit to the General Assembly
through his service and loyalty, and we are delighted to have this
opportunity to accord special recognition to such an outstanding and
deserving individual. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate
concurring:
That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South
Carolina, by this resolution, congratulate Brian A. Comer of
Anderson on winning the 1995 Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award at
