A SENATE RESOLUTION

ACKNOWLEDGING THE FAVORABLE IMPACT OF INTERNATIONAL TRADE AND EXPORTS ON THE GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA ECONOMY AND DECLARING THE WEEK OF MAY 21-27, 2001, SOUTH CAROLINA WORLD TRADE ASSOCIATION "GO TRADE WEEK" IN RECOGNITION OF THE ROLE OF THE GO TRADE NETWORK IN DEVELOPING GRASSROOTS INFRASTRUCTURE SUPPORTING INTERNATIONAL TRADE AND EXPORTS.

Whereas, international trade and exports are increasingly important contributing factors to the continued growth and development of South Carolina's economy; and

Whereas, exports of South Carolina products increased twenty percent last year as South Carolina industries shipped a variety of products to countries around the globe; and

Whereas, the total value of South Carolina's exports approached nine billion dollars in the year 2000; and

Whereas, South Carolina exports create fifty-eight thousand jobs for South Carolina workers and their families, contributing significantly to their quality of life and that of South Carolina communities throughout our State; and

Whereas, the top five markets for South Carolina exports are Canada, Germany, Mexico, the United Kingdom, and Japan; and

Whereas, the top five exports by industry sector in 2000 were machinery, vehicles, plastic, electrical machinery, and rubber; and

Whereas, the top five markets for South Carolina exports combined brought in more than four million dollars to the state's economy in the year 2000; and

Whereas, the Business Roundtable go TRADE project is a trade association composed of representatives of agriculture, corporations, allied trade associations and organizations, chambers of commerce, and individuals who support policies to enhance exports and economic opportunity for South Carolina citizens; and

Whereas, the Business Roundtable has created the go TRADE network in South Carolina and twenty-four other states to develop a permanent grassroots infrastructure in support of international trade and exports. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the Senate acknowledge the favorable impact of international trade and exports on the growth and development of the South Carolina economy and declare the week of May 21-27, 2001, South Carolina World Trade Association "go TRADE Week" in recognition of the role of the go TRADE network in developing grassroots infrastructure supporting international trade and exports.
