 WOMAN JUDGE IN SOUTH CAROLINA'S JUDICIARY WHO SERVED WITH GREAT DISTINCTION
 FOR A QUARTER OF A CENTURY, TO CONGRATULATE HER ON HER OUTSTANDING
 CONTRIBUTION TO THE ADMINISTRATION OF JUSTICE IN HER COMMUNITY AS A CHARLESTON
 COUNTY MAGISTRATE, AND TO EXTEND EVERY GOOD WISH TO HER AND HER FAMILY DURING
 HER RETIREMENT AND IN ALL OF HER FUTURE ENDEAVORS.

TO COMMEND FORMER JUDGE MARGIE FULLER CANNON, A PIONEER WOMAN JUDGE IN SOUTH CAROLINA'S JUDICIARY WHO SERVED WITH GREAT DISTINCTION FOR A QUARTER OF A CENTURY, TO CONGRATULATE HER ON HER OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTION TO THE ADMINISTRATION OF JUSTICE IN HER COMMUNITY AS A CHARLESTON COUNTY MAGISTRATE, AND TO EXTEND EVERY GOOD WISH TO HER AND HER FAMILY DURING HER RETIREMENT AND IN ALL OF HER FUTURE ENDEAVORS.

Whereas, Judge Margie Fuller Cannon was a pioneer woman judge who served with great distinction as a Charleston County Magistrate from June 6, 1969, until her retirement on June 30, 1994, having devoted twenty-five years of dedicated service to the judiciary of South Carolina and the citizens of Charleston County; and

Whereas, Margie Fuller Cannon was born eighty years ago in Newberry County, South Carolina, the daughter of George B. Fuller of Richland County and Zula Stribble Fuller of Lexington County; and

Whereas, Margie F. Cannon attended Newberry High School, and while the United States was heavily involved in the World War II mobilization effort, she began working at the Charleston Naval Shipyard where she was employed for three years in the machine shop; and

Whereas, Margie F. Cannon became a part of the judicial system of South Carolina in 1959 when she began work as a judicial and administrative clerk in the court of the Honorable Eugene Herron, Charleston County Magistrate for the North Charleston area; and

Whereas, because of her extensive experience, judicial temperament, and competence Margie F. Cannon was appointed on June 6, 1969, as Charleston County Magistrate for the North Charleston area, and became one of the first women magistrates serving in South Carolina's judicial system. Judge Cannon issued warrants, held bond hearings, conducted preliminary hearings, issued civil lawsuit papers, and conducted both criminal and civil trials; and

Whereas, Judge Cannon became a community leader in the North Charleston area, serving as president of the Trident Business and Professional Woman's Organization, and as an active member of the American Women's Business Association, the Traveler's Protective Association, and as a co-owner with her husband of a neighborhood grocery store; and

Whereas, Judge Cannon became a leader of the South Carolina Magistrates Association, serving as Secretary-Treasurer of that association from 1973 to 1977. Declining election as Vice-President and President of the South Carolina Magistrates Association, she and the officers of that association were instrumental in developing and initiating a training and continuing education program for magistrates at the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy, funded in part from criminal justice assessments recommended by the South Carolina Magistrates Association and enacted by the General Assembly; and

Whereas, in 1944, Margie F. Cannon married James Alton Cannon of Berkeley County in a ceremony performed in Gulfport, Mississippi, after which Mr. Cannon enlisted in the United States Navy; subsequent to World War II, the Cannons were blessed with three children, namely, James Alton Cannon, Jr., Attorney at Law, currently serving as Sheriff of Charleston County; Odella Cannon Schoenberg; and Rhame B. Cannon; six grandchildren; and three great grandchildren; and

Whereas, subsequent to their marriage, Judge Cannon and husband, James Alton Cannon enjoyed fifty-seven years of loving commitment to one another until his untimely death in 2001; and

Whereas, the members of the House of Representatives wish to publicly recognize, congratulate, and extend best wishes to former Judge Margie F. Cannon for her dedicated and distinguished service. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives, by this resolution, commend former Judge Margie Fuller Cannon, a pioneer woman judge in South Carolina's judiciary who served with great distinction for a quarter of a century, congratulate her on her outstanding contribution to the administration of justice in her community as a Charleston County magistrate, and extend every good wish to her and her family during her retirement and in all of her future endeavors.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Judge Margie F. Cannon of North Charleston.
